"Video is loading..." indefinately

Postby navysealltblue » 21 Sep 2008 15:33

So I have tried to watch wmvs and mpegs online and when it tries to use vlc to play the videos, i get the "Video is loading..." message, but after a half hour of waiting, it still hadn't loaded. I have WinXP Pro SP2, with Firefox 3.0.1, VLC 0.9.2
Let me know if i can be of any other help with giving info that will lead to me getting help with this. Thanks again

Thank you for your answer but I still don't understand what to do ... What does it mean to "add VLC install dir to %PATH%"?

I saw the variable "path" and added the VLC install dir which is "F:\programmes\vlc\" but it still doesn't work and I'm not sure it was the right thing to do...

If the path is set up correctly, you can press Winkey+r and type vlc, and VLC should launch. In that vlc directory there should be avcodec-51.dll, libfreetype-6.dll etc. that npvlc.dll needs. If you don't want to kill time with PATH fighting, you can copy those dll files to firefox plugin folder.

Does it help if you copy those dll files to %windir%\System32 ?

I'm using Firefox 3.0 and had the same problem but I fixed it. I initially tried adding the path to the VLC folder to my system path but that didn't work. Then I had an AHA! moment and realized that you can tell Firefox how to deal with certain file types. So I opened Tools>Options>Applications and scrolled down to "Windows Media Audio/Video file". On the right side of the window open the drop down box and select "select other" then browse to the VLC folder and select VLC.exe and click open. That should do it. You should now be able to view streaming video in Firefox. I don't know if you need to set the path for this to work. It may work without having to fiddle with the path setting.

One thing I noticed is that on one of my computers, under Tools>Options>Applications, Firefox only had "Windows Media Audio/Video file" as a content type while on my other computer it had "Windows Media Audio/Video file (video/x-ms-wm)" and "Windows Media Audio/Video file (video/x-ms-wmv)". I set all of them to VLC.exe just to make sure it worked with all file types.

I don't understand why VLC install doesn't do this automatically. It would save people a lot of time. Hope this works for you.

Opening files in VLC browser plugin and opening them in VLC.exe are two different things.

And if you have done the path trick, does vlc start if you press Windows key + r and type vlc?

Do you have multiple VLC installs in your computer? Is the VLC Mozilla plugin copied to Firefox plugin directory?

No I don't have multiple instance of VLC installed... and I thought the VLC Mozilla plugin was automatically installed in the Firefox plugin directory. How can I see if it's been done correctly?

Thank you

This Version should fix the problem:
http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win ... 1110-0203/

You can test the vlc plugin for firefox 3.0.3 at this site:
http://altair.videolan.org/~dionoea/vlc-plugin-demo/

Good luck :D

I realize that the plugin that you stated works for firefox 3.03, but I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with it working for FF 3.0.4? I just updated (have not tried it with 3.0.3) and thought that it should work anyways. Unfortunately, I get this window alert box when I click on http://altair.videolan.org/~dionoea/vlc ... in=mozilla

"Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program ...

R6034
An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly.
Please contact the application's support team for more information. "

After clicking "ok", I get the screen that says "Video is loading" indefinitely. I've had this problem once before, but am unable to recall how or even if I was able to resolve that problem. I tried googling it to no avail. :(

Since the message seems to cut off, I can't tell if the problem lies in Firefox, or VLC, or maybe I'm just missing a .dll on my system or something? I tend to install things in my own directories (ie, C: Program Files\Stuff I installed) so maybe some things aren't pointing to the right location because they are set to default to "C:Program FIles\<name of folder>..." ?

Another user pointed out to create an environment variable so we could use windows+r and type in "vlc" to launch vlc. I was unable to have any success with that.

Thanks for any help!
