Newb Question - Getting "DVD Player" Functonality From VLC

Postby dballing » 30 Oct 2008 03:21

I use VLC to play DVDs from my collection that I have ripped to VIDEO_TS directories, so that I can get better battery life on airplanes.

I notice, though, that the "<<" and ">>" buttons on the window only navigate by jumping forward or backward in time a little bit. And the "|<<" and ">>|" buttons on the controller seem to be "previous title" and "next title" which -- obviously -- is counterintuitive given years of using remotes where those icons are used for chapter advance/prev.

Is there a way to get the GUI to provide chapter forward/back functionality via the existing buttons, or alternatively via some other buttons? (I was reading in a different forum that the player window should have buttons in the bottom right if it's playing "chapter capable" media but I've never seen such things ever while playing VIDEO_TS rips). (For example this post viewtopic.php?f=7&t=50290 shows the DVD style buttons on the Windows version)

I'm willing to acknowledge being stupid if it's something right in front of my eyes, but it seems like I can't be the only one who wishes VLC would - when playing back a DVD - add a few buttons to the controller that added things like "Menu", "chapter +/-", etc.

Can anyone offer some insight, or suggestions?

Thanks!

Cheers,
Derek

Hi there

I have exactly the same issue - I've searched the web and this forum for an adequate answer to this problem, and no luck - could some experienced VLC user please put me out of my misery??!!

I am using VLC for all video files, including ripped DVDs - of course, I want the full functionality of a DVD player, notably an easy way of skipping DVD chapters, preferably by use of the Apple remote, or alternatively some "virtual" buttons on the screen. It is a real hassle having to select an individual chapter from the playback menu.

Is there any way that this can be acheived in VLC, or will I have to look elsewhere for this feature? (something that appears to be available on the Windows version). I've looked at using the standard Mac DVD player, but there doesn't appear an ability to associate it with file types (rather, having to select a TS_VIDEO folder), which is an even big a hassle!

I can't think there would be many people who would want the "track skip" buttons on the virtual and physical remote to actually skip to another DVD (or repeat the same DVD), so is there no hope for those of us who want to be able to use these buttons for a standard DVD purpose?

Many thanks for any replies.
Jonathan
