BANG! POP! Audio pops with loud events (avi)...

Whilst watching avis, if there is a loud noise, VLC will make popping sounds. I have tested the offending files using mplayer and they play with no issues. I would use mplayer, but the video output is poor. I could record the sound if y'all think it would help diagnose the problem. I have tried changing all available options in the prefs, in particular the different audio codecs, to no avail.

Anyone got any ideas?
