You use Vista? If so, have you checked from Windows mixer, that you haven't muted VLC?

Vista has application level sound mixing. Just right click the speaker icon next to system clock and select Open Volume Mixer when VLC is running, and check that VLC isn't muted nor volume is too low.

i checked that, and
- no the volume of VLC is not muted
- no the volume of VLC is very low (to the maximum)

so i'm very desperate... because i NEED SUBTITLES for my little bro

I have a Sony Vaio I recently bought that has the same problem. WMP gobbles memory and processor to the point it will crash so I am looking for a better player. Media player classic gave me sound but a distorted picture (stutters or has green lines through it) so tried VLC. Has the no sound problem - tried the checks suggested but all ok. Have found that if I run WMP for a few seconds and then run VLC the sound etc works ok. Go figure???? I suspect it is definately a Vista problem because of all the other problems I am having with the PC.

Have tried the suggestion and Directx seems to be the one that works for me but VLC does not always keep the preference settings so I have to sometimes go and redo my preferences. I note there is another discussion about this but no resolution execpt to downgrade. Will see how things go over the next few days and re-boots.

Does it help if you rename the vlc.exe to something like notvlc.exe and try again? What does Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) say when playback begins?

One thing you could try - if you have a high definition sound card in the machine is to go into the options and turn off all enhancements.

I have a similar problem on one machine with XP (an ECS G733 notebook, with Realtek I guess), where playing a DVD with VLC gets no sound at all.

But I found a (temporary) workaround for this: during play, I go to Audio menu -> Device -> click on Mono. The sound comes then up and well. Then I put it back on Stereo and it remains ok. Still, one of the problem with this method is that when going to other chapter or menu the sound mutes again, so I have to do the trick again for each DVD chapter or menu.

I don't know if renaming the vlc.exe is THE way to fix this (I didn't try this here), because I suppose it breaks the system association with VLC, like the one when I insert a DVD and then a small menu comes up offering a list with DVD players to play with.

mendoza: it is your Vista mixer. http://kevingc.blogspot.com/2007/03/win ... trick.html make sure you changing volume from right panel.

secarica: rename trick doesn't work in XP, because mixer is system level in XP. Does changing of audio output module help or updating sound device drivers?

I have a slightly different sound problem. If I double click an AVI file, VLC opens and begins to play but there is no sound. If I close VLC and double click the AVI file again and it plays with sound. I tried renaming vlc.exe but the symptoms didn't change. Any ideas?

I updated the audio device drivers, and yes, that worked. My single problem was to make sure what audio device that was, because until now the drivers were taken from the manufacturers site, but in the end that proved to be what I have guessed, Realtek AC'97.

Thanks,

I changed the audio output setting to Win32 waveOut extension output and the problem seems to be corrected.

mendoza: Problem have to be in Vista mixer, because it is only place where executable name change should matter. VLC still uses same config file. And if it was VLC config related issues, resetting VLC settings should have cured that.

You could try to start two vlc.exe instances and see if it changes anything.
