VLC Media player 0.8.0 now available

We counted the votes and the results are conclusive. The VideoLAN team is happy to announce version 0.8.0 of VLC media player.

This new release features:
* Re-write of the input layer.
(better, faster, more extensible - eg. allows multi-input support).
* Re-write of the transcoding layer.
(everything VLC plays can now be transcoded).
* New plugins cache system to speed up launch time.
* Improvements to the subtitles/OSD subsystem.
* Vastly improved DVD support.
* DirectX Media Object decoder/encoder (Win32 only - supports WMV3).
* Cross-platform OpenGL video output.
* New screen capture input plugin (to stream your desktop).
* Windows Media Server RTSP support.
* Multipart JPEG webcam support
* Multipart JPEG muxing.
(for video streaming to a Mozilla Web Browser)
* DVB subtitles decoding/encoding.
* Audio equalizer.
* Vobsub support
* Multichannel audio downmixing

This release doesn't include DTS audio decoding support.
DTS Inc. claims that distributing this software with DTS decoding capabilities is a violation of their patent EP 864 146. At DTS Inc. request, we decided, as a precautionary measure, to provisionally suspend the distribution of VLC with DTS decoding capabilities while reviewing DTS Inc. claim. This is not an acknowledgement of the validity of the claim.

When an open-source implementation of this codec exists. Afaik, nobody is working on it at the moment, since it is pretty complicated.

WMV3-support for Windows is only possible by using a Microsoft-framework, which does not exist for Mac OS. Additionally, the Windows Media Player 9 for Mac, which contains this codec, is built monolithic (e.g. just one file without external libraries), so linking to it is not possible.

when i played from http in version 7.2 it was luggy sometimes. because had no cahing capabilities. but i could use slider bar or seek command to move to another part of movie.
8.0 has great cahing... but seek doesn't work! when movie stacked or skipped frames i always returned to beginng. ((((

sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I loved the 0.8.0 -test 2 and just downloaded the 0.8.0 and its not doing it for me.
i am running OSX 10.3.4 on a dual 1.25Ghz with 1.25GB ram and radeon 9800. I am trying to play a 20MBps HD clip of the shuttle launch. this was jerky under vlc 0.7.2 but when I play it in 0.8.0 test 2 it is perfect. Trying it now with the release version of 0.8.0 its back to its jerkiness. What has gone wrong with the released version??? Let me know if you need any more info, the release version is going straight to the trash for now and I will stay with the beta!

I'm using VLC 0.7.2 (winxp) with tunner card for UDP streaming a television channel. The UDP stream is sent to a VLC streaming HUB, whitch uses also VLC 0.7.2 but for linux

Some days ago i've tried 0.8.0-test2 and i've noticed that on the tunner PC (with winxp) the 0.8.0-test2 is really buggy and it crashes some 2-3 seconds after the stream output starts.

Yesterday i was really happy to see that you have released 0.8.0 final
It's playing great TCP/UDP streams and also tunners/webcams
Unfortunaltely it does not encode the tunner capture. Actually encoding starts with send ONLY 1 UDP packet, and no more
If i use "Play locally" + "UDP" stream output options then a black screen is shown, and then freezes. The application is actually working (i can use the menus) but not the stream encoding part

The test2 was using OpenGL rendering, but it proved to have many problems for people. Therefore it was disabled again and the older rendering is used again.

I've found out that if the console is open then vlc makes stream output.
If it is closed then it's not streaming and makes the same thing as described above

Mister The DJ, can you say why i am playing divx movies from http with 7.2 and i can move slider to any position of movie, but in 8.0 this does not work?!!?!?

VLC 0.8 chrashes if i try to play an AVI-DivX with DolbyDigital 5.1 over my Sonica USB. It works fine with a VOB-File ...

Cool, the DivX 5.2(.1) playback bug is still in 0.8.0. Render a video with "Adaptive Single Consecutive" or "Adaptive Multiple Consecutive" and you will see, the playback is stuttering.

It is well known that it is a bad idea to store MPEG-4 with B-frames in avi and expect it to work. avi wasn't designed to handle B-frames.
Still, since apparently a large producing tool like DivX 5.2 produces this --please stay polite--, and people are using it, perhaps we should try to find a way how to support this.

Isn't there an easier way to stream http movies than copying the url from firefox, opening vlc, pasting the url?

The autodetection for subs seems a bit dogdy. Sometimes vlc fails to find a sub it has just found the last time the movie was played. (using same filenames for movie and sub)

And is there a way to make vlc use the subs (if it finds any) automatically, without having to enabling it first as track 1.

why can't play v0.8 .bin/.cue files anymore? And as every DVD Menu (even simple ones) are displayed wrong for me, I think I'll switch back to 0.72 and wait for better days

The message "ffmpeg: av_find_stream_info failed" appeared when opening a DV file. File was created as an export from iMovie on Mac OS X 10.3. I'm using version 0.8 of VLC

This did not happen with a previous version of VLC.

XviD support this since early development...
Due the fact, that .avi is only a container and not a format...
I guess it makes no difference if I pack in .ogm either, does it?

Wow!! this version is amazing... many bugas are gone on Windows Version like probs of sound on MPEG or MPEG2, Subtitles SRT are show perfectly.

- still some probs with Subtitles SSA with the Effects who are show like "!Effects" in front of the subtitles
- Probs with QDM2 audio... still no sound on .Mov with this format

The test2 was using OpenGL rendering, but it proved to have many problems for people. Therefore it was disabled again and the older rendering is used again.

Is there a way for me to enable openGL rendering in the preferences of the final version of 0.8? It seemed to be working well for me!
