Trouble with Quicktime (.mov) files

Postby DavidFeuer » 25 Oct 2004 03:38

When I try to view a quicktime movie in VLC, I see the video just fine, but I don't get any sound. The debug window shows this:

[00000243] logger interface: VLC media player - version 0.8.0-test2 Janus - (c)
1996-2004 VideoLAN
[00000243] logger interface:
Warning: if you can't access the GUI anymore, open a dos command box, go to the
directory where you installed VLC and run "vlc -I wxwin"

[00000243] logger interface: Using the logger interface module...
[00000282] quicktime decoder error: cannot initialize QT
[00000282] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `QDM2'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

Let me know if you need any more info.

VLC needs a certain QuickTime dll next to the vlc.exe to play this audio. We are not allowed to distribute this dll.

FAQ

The details of making Quicktime audio work should really be in the FAQ. Also, what's the chance of an open-source QDM2 decoder in the nearish future?

Yes they should be. However that would mean somone actually likes to maintain those, which is not true :)

a search in ther forum tells this
VLC for win32 can use the dlls installed by quicktime to read QDM2 audio (used in some quicktime movie trailers for instance).
But for this to work you also need to copy an additional dll (http://www.videolan.org/pub/testing/win ... Client.dll) to the VLC directory, so not many people actually have a QDM2 audio "enabled" VLC.
he dll in question is a QuickTime component. I believe we can redistribute (i.e. put in on our site) but not repackage or include into VLC
That's a licensing issue which we choose to follow (unlike several other programs )
