Ok I have had some time now to play with the new vlc releases including the 1.0 nightlies and I must say that although the feature list is amazing, the stability issues are too numerous and the smoothness is lost.
I had been watching some mkv video files and noticed that the new releases took a while before the file started playing, almost like it was rendering! When I reverted back to 0.8.6i, the files opened in an instant. Quick smooth and very mac os x like.
Also with the same files, I noticed that seeking was a problem. I like to use the very short forwards jump (5 second jump) for fast forwarding through intros etc. The new releases can't jump at all with the files i have, but as soon as I reverted back to 0.8.6i, my forwards and backward jumps worked like a charm.
Some files I have been viewing have come out choppy, and at times the picture freezes whilst the sound continues! At one point before I reverted back 0.8.6i, I had to be rescued by perian!
Although this may seem like bashing page, I'm just trying to raise the overall fact that the new releases are not as smooth as 0.8.6 releases. Again the new features are brilliant and it is rich, but thats not a substitute for slick, smooth, playback of files. I continue to follow the trac, keep up to date with new releases, but for now I am happy with o.8.6i and i'll wait until there is a new vlc which is as smooth as a baby's backside!
I'll continue to contribute as much as I can, keep up the good work videoLAN
