Pre-release: VLC 0.8.0-test2

I'm using Mac OS 10.3.5 on a G4 Powerbook 667 (512MB RAM).
Every so often doubling the window size in VLC 0.8.0-test2 will cause the entire screen to become garbled (like a still frame of what happens when you turn to a TV channel for a station you don't get), and the computer freezes so I need to restart. This can happen with an avi or an mpg, but it doesn't always happen and there is no correlation with any particular file.
For whatever reason, neither VLC nor the OS records this as a crash, so I have no log file to show.

Probably a bug in you videocard driver that is being triggered by something VLC does.

thanks for the good work. Since the 0.8.0 Test 1 the transcode of ogm to dbox-ts worked quite ok (now with sound). Thanks for that.

But if i'm using Test 2 after a few seconds vlc gpfs.

The log window disappears too, so i could only read something like

Mux-ts-Strange packet size ...

Second thing is, when playing the ogm on the PC the length of the movie is 00:00:00

same exact problem using OS X.3 and a PMG5 2x2Ghz 1Go RAM and the ATI 9600 XT 128Mo !
it just freezes and i have to swtich off and on the machine to restart !
weird problem that i never had on any other VLC versions !
good luck though the app is a killer one !

Hello,

It is said that version 0.8 test 2 supports vobsub subtitles. But I could not make it work. I expect the subtitles to be loaded by itself after checking the related option in the preferences. But they are not shown. If I try to load the vobsub .idx or .sub while opening the file, it complains about the type of the subtitle. Is there any other package I should install for vobsub support?

Autodetect Subtitles doesn't work. I have .idx and .sub files in the same folder with the same name and they don't autoload. I have to put it manualy on the preferences and that's not good since I have movies that are in two halfs. So I have to change the preferences with each movie. Not good.

Try a nightly build. vobsub autodetection was still broken in test2.

hi- sorry for taking so long to reply back- for the transcode problem.. I see I have transcoding problem when I try to transcode 3000KB mpg ( or any mpeg ) to any other format and when I open and trandcode a mpeg file to a low bitrate, it just rewrites the original file... .7 works fine just .8 does this

I noticed that it did not generate a proper MRL missing audio channel number I corrected it but it still did not work. I just retested again today to make sure I was not doing anything wrong still no go

okay just did a simple test of something - before posting this message- I used version .7 to create a MRL for streaming and I copy and pasted that into the version .8 mrl streaming line and it would transcode but it seems to transcode with extreme cpu usage as compared to version .7 ( btw I using windows version VLC)

okay I see the problem if you compare the two auto generated mrl lines from version .7 and .8-- version .8 does not insert the vcodec

0.8.0-test2 thought it would be nice to surprise me with a kernel panic when I maximized the playback window (XviD video, if that makes any difference, but I doubt it). No postprocessing or anything like that. Here is the offending kernel panic:

The computer is a revision A 15" aluminum PowerBook G4 with the Radeon 9600 Mobility. Let me know if you need more details, although there's not too much else to provide.

This is a bug in your videocard driver that was probably triggered by an ususual thing VLC did. But a bug is a bug and only Apple can fix it.

Hey, I don't want to bother you guys or anything, but the late frame skipped problem i described in page 3 still happens on the lastest nightly, and so does the subtitle problem i described in page 4 I'm uploadind the .srt to ftp://streams.videolan.org/incoming/ for you guys to take a look at it, and see if you find something unusual about it, as it seems to happen only with this file.... maybe you'll see something i didn't, as it looks as a perfectly normal file to me...

yup, there is a serious issue with window resizing in test 2. Try opening an avi, and dragging around the window size by the lower right tab. your machine will kernel panic within 1 minute. reproducible EVERY time. a pretty serious bug I may add.

I already looked at this first problem of yours quite a while ago. The problem comes from the fact that the frames on which VLC stutters, all seem to have the same timestamp. Since VLC detects for the later frames that this time has already passed, it will drop the frame, so it can 'catch up' with what it expects is the correctly timestamped stream.

This is an error in the AVI (probably caused by an overloaded/stressed encoder or something, judging from the huge amount of activity at that particular point). It will not be fixed (it would break other more common situations).

Unfortunatly you were a tad too late with your other upload. The 0.8.0 deadline had just past. However, i was able to track the issue after several times of diging trough commit logs. The issue will be fixed in a release after 0.8.0 (which i think/hope might be sooner than later

This is an issue with the opengl renderer (and basically the opengl driver of macosx). This renderer has been disabled in the final release.
