dvb-t tuner: channels with same frequency, how distinguish?

dvb-t tuner: channels with same frequency, how distinguish?

Postby grozea » 09 Oct 2008 03:28

My hauppauge nova-t usb dvb-t tuner card works when setting these details under Media > Open Capture Device... in VLC 0.94 on Win XP:

DVB DirectShow
DVB-T
522000 KHz

However that only plays one channel. Several other channels share that frequency. How do I set VLC to play them instead?
Below are screencaps of the properties from two such channels from the dvb-t playback application ProgDVB. Can someone please help me with what data from the screencaps should go where in the VLC Capture Device advanced settings?

If I just get one such channel explained then the rest will probably be easy to set up.

Normally, VLC will autodetect the situation and provides the different channels from the menus.

Aha! The menus! :D I looked for some channel selection there earlier but must have missed it somehow.

To change to another channel on the same frequency I just have to go:
Playback > Program > ____

A new problem though. When selecting channel I get this menu:
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/4751 ... tchxe4.png

There are a lot of items on the menu. Most are just empty (the ones with numbers only). But even among the ones with text only a few are real working channels (the other are channels for other regions not working in my area but for some reason still picked up by the tuner). Then there's a similar menu for another frequency.

Is there some more convenient way to access the channels in VLC than through those menus?
Is it perhaps possible to make a playlist where each entry selects a specific channel?

(Another problem, BTW: swedish characters ÅÄÖ are replaced with squares in the channel names, as shown by the screencap)

edit:
When I click "advanced" during tuner setup I later get a complex settings string in the bottom input box. Example:

dvb-t:// :dvb-frequency=5222000 :dvb-bandwidth=-1 :dvb-caching=300 :dvb-frequency=11954000 :dvb-inversion=2 :dvb-polarisation="H" :dvb-network-id=0 :dvb-azimuth=0 :dvb-elevation=0 :dvb-longitude=0 :dvb-lnb-lof1=0 :dvb-lnb-lof2=0 :dvb-lnb-slof=0 :dvb-fec=9 :dvb-srate=27500000 :dvb-modulation=-1 :dvb-code-rate-hp=-1 :dvb-code-rate-lp=-1 :dvb-bandwidth=-1 :dvb-guard=-1 :dvb-transmission=-1 :dvb-hierarchy=-1

Under Tools > Media Information... > Codec Details > _____
there is a program number listed for each channel. Example: "[Program 5800]". My hunch is that I need to input that "5800" somewhere among the parameters above. But where?

through viewtopic.php?f=14&t=50410&p=162350
I found the needed syntax:
dvb-t:// :dvb-frequency=522000 :dvb-bandwidth=-1 :program=3010
where 3010 is the channel number as described above

Start VLC from the command-line with a TV channel playing like so:
C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe dvb-t:// :dvb-frequency=522000 :dvb-bandwidth=-1 :program=3010
