old wx interface ?

Postby test1234 » 03 Oct 2008 21:19

i personally think the new interface is a insult to all users of vlc including myself. with its oversized play button it is clearly appealing more to "special people" that wouldn't find the play button otherwise, than to normal users.
also i liked the old division between interface elements above and below the video.

so i am asking if anyone with a build environment for windows could compile a vlc with the wx gui module or just the wx gui module for me and all the people that could find the play button even before it was oversized or could alternatively someone please point me to a detailed guide on how to compile for windows ?

Or maybe the interface emphasizes a more commonly used button, saving precious milliseconds, like the keyhole back button in FireFox. And the interface isn't done yet.

wxwindows GUI is discontinued IIRC. But if you want to support it, you can start to maintain it.

Can I laugh?

0.9.3 will have a slightly smaller button, and 1.0 will allow you to put the toolbar above the video.

Thank god!!! Will 0-9-3 also have a smaller and less garish volume slider too? How about being able to reduce the size of the toolbar too?

While I do appreciate the power of VLC, its GUI has always been horrific. 0.9.2 is, by far, the worst yet. I have to use it in minimal mode to have any use out of it at all. Seriously, 2.5. cm or so of dead space taken up by ugly mismatching buttons at the bottom of the screen -- hideous and pointless.

Guys, much as you are good developers, if you ever want VLC to take off mainstream you need to bring professional-standard designers on board to vastly improve the interface. It needs a great deal more work -- both aesthetically and in terms of utility.

I'm sorry to be blunt, but you have proven not to be capable of doing this yourselves, you need to bring new people in to the project with design skills.

The GUI is not the best, but I far prefer it to the old wxWidgets interface.

In fact, I wonder if it's possible to have 0.8.6i with the Qt interface? :D This solution would provide a better interface but fewer under-the-hood bugs.

I love VLC but the large buttons suck. Plus where are the variable speed rewind and advance buttons?

What do you have a vista interface programmer on the staff?

If it aint broke.....

Surprisingly disappointed.

No fulltime Windows devs working with VLC. And if you want better interface design, please send us mockups or tell some design guru to make us one. And if someone could do usability test (for example as part of Bachelor thesis or Master thesis) that would also help.

You can have a native slider in the preferences...
Your attitude just gives me the willing of never fix those things...

Same, please go away with your rude words. Speed rewind and advances buttons are still here, open your eyes, read the forum or send a patch or shut up.

j-b, please stop asking people to "shut up". Complaints are never fun but but try to be polite, losing ones temper is never beneficial, if someone was inclined to help out your temper could very well scare them off.

edwood, why don't you try one of the many skins available?

No, I usually am very polite around here, look at most of my posts...

But people coming to tell us that what we do "suck", like edwood, or people like owlnation, who qualify our work of horrific, hideous and pointless, I find that I am too nice to even answer, and not delete posts+account.

If you don't understand the concept of open source and free time, then we can do nothing for you.

I too am praying for a skin to give 0.9.x the old GUI. My biggest complaint is the extended GUI panel being changed. The RR and FF buttons also seem more awkward.

IMO Qt4 looks much much nicer then ugly wxwidgets which I've compiled "for the old time sakes" this morning.
Anyway There's *ABSOLUTELY* no reason what so ever to complain, in the case that you ARE getting this software for free of charge, if play button looks big to you tough luck, I certainly like it big (which is easier and more accessible) if you can argue we can argue about this all day long if you want.
Lastly there's no support what so ever for the old unused discontinued wxwidgets interface so don't hope there will ever be any.

Duh, first time I see someone missing the old, broken, always-memory-allocated and very limited extended GUI...
