Hard to change subtitle font/color/size with VLC!

Postby Echo » 17 Mar 2008 06:47

Why is it so difficult to edit subtitles with VLCplayer?
Most of the movies I watch are with subtitles. The problem is that the font is either too small or bad color and usually hard to read when watched on a big screen. But when I play them with another player they look much better. BS Player has an excellent way to edit subtitles. Windows Media Player shows them well also.

The subtitles I have are mostly in *.txt, *.srt, *.sub and *.idx format
I have been adjusting the subtitle settings million of times in VLC player, and most the time they don't even change.

I hope u can implement hotkeys for subtitles in the next release, such as moving them up, down, left, right, font size, color etc. That would be so great.

idx+sub subtitles are images, so editing them is little difficult (excluding color changes). With VLC you can't adjust subtitle settings runtime, but you can change vertical position of subtitles (but you can't move subtitles below/above movie). There has been some improvements in nightly builds but those things haven't been completed yet.

Then how come it is shown better when I play the same subtitles in Windows Media Player than in VLCplayer?

Because VLC only uses build-in filters and WMP uses directshow stuff. VSfilter and FFDshow for example have good subtitle options but you can't use those with VLC.

Can you implement that in VLC, maybe not the software, but somehow change the standard so it look at bit bigger and better?
I love VLC player and that is the only player I use. But it's hard for me to read the subtitles.

Subtitle support will get better on upcoming versions but i won't make promises about how good it will become. If you open subtitles form File -> Open file... you can choose bigger subtitles, if subtitle size is an issue for you.

That is good news and I'm looking forward for that.
I think that the main problem is the font, it looks like it is written in italics, and therefore hard to read. Is it somehow possible to change it to "Times New Roman" or "Calibri" in non italic order and maybe bold as well? Times New Roman in a big format is excellent to read and "Calibri" looks really good too.

You can try Freetype2 subtitle renderer from Settings -> Preferences and Video -> Subtitles/OSD and adjust font from Video -> Subtitles/OSD-> Text renderer but I am no 100% sure if it works correctly.

Here's my problem with this. The subtitles are ok enough to read on the computer, but I'd rather watch a movie on my television (that's why I hooked it up to video card after all). Unfortunately, the screen ratio is different so it becomes very difficult to see on the TV. I have bad eyes to begin with and in certain movies, the default white for external soft subs simply doesn't work. Why would it be so difficult to have an option to simply have the option to change it to a color that makes it easier for you to read? I'm no programmer, but if say the srt file is being read by VLC to begin with, couldn't it read the user's preferences and say "Ok, this subtitle should be displayed as yellow instead of white" or whatever color the user likes, whether its puke green or hot pink? One glaring example to me is with a simple black and white movie... an unchangeable white subtitle doesn't make much sense does it? I can understand not being able to adjust it in hardcoded subtitles, but not with srt files and the like. Correct me if i am wrong? I did change the font size with the Open File dialog like mentioned, but that doesn't really resolve the overall issue.

My apologies. I did not see that. I must have been looking in the wrong submenu. Thank you!

Where to download 0.9.3+
I found this on site:
Windows (14 MB). This is version 0.9.2, we do not have a 0.9.3 windows release.
