Most likely version 1.1.1 should be fine, but you should use version 1.0.9 to get a really stable application.
The easiest way to install subversion is by using one of the binary packages (the one that suits your system). Otherwise, you can compile the source-code yourself by a simple "configure && make" in the source directory after decompressing the trunk. Note that you'll need root-rights to install the software (independently from compiling the source or using a binary package).
