How to fix pixelate / no-overlay video in Vista

Postby lordmarv » 04 Sep 2008 14:12

Hello, I fixed my overlay problems (viewtopic.php?f=14&t=49754) with MPC classic option for DirectShow video EVR (Vista / .Net3) instead of VMR / Overlay mode bluf stuff. I wonder how to set this in VideoLan :o

There isn't EVR output yet on VLC (I am working to get one included at some point). I just can't figure out, why would EVR work correctly if another outputs won't.

Thank you for adding support for this!

I guess its another problematic stuff from M$ -
The mixer also performs deinterlacing and color correction.

Because EVR is build on top of Direct3D, this issue should also come up with EVR if it comes up with VLC Direct3D output or with VMR9 (renderless + render video in 3D) in MPC.

Ok, I tryied these rendering options in MPC (624px divx):
Old Renderer: good quality (not best), overlay doesnt work 20% cpu usage
Overlay mixer: same as above
VMR7 (windowed): same as above
VMR9 (windowed): good quality, motion with visible horizontal misalign blocks (what really sux), 10% cpu usage, no overlay
VMR7 (renderless): same as VMR7 (windowed)
VMR9 (renderless): same as VMR9 (windowed) - event playing with surface / resizer doesnt affect anything
EVR: very clear video, no laggy, however overlay doesnt work either (I can take screens with printscreen), 8% cpu usage

Overlay doesnt seems to works anyway :! even in media player :? I wonder, is there another way how to check for overlay?

Overlay is almost gone in Vista, it only works if you disable Aero. It isn't supported in EVR, in VMR, or in Direct3D at all.

I haven't tried with 64 bit Vista, because I don't have one nor do I have access to it. But if you can't get it work with any media player, it is prolly gone.
