Mozilla plug-in won't play mov files (unless forced)

Postby DavidOC » 03 Sep 2008 17:51

The plugin won't show up whenever I try to view any quicktime media (.mov). It does show when I view a page with wmv content. I'm using firefox 3.0 and VLC 0.8.6i on Vista x64.

Try going to in Firefox:
Edit >> Preferences

And click on the "Applications" tab.

Scroll down and look for "MPEG-4 video", or perhaps "MOV file", and change the "Action" to use the VLC plugin, assuming it is there.

Neither MPEG-4 video or MOV file appear in the applications tab. All other media files are currently set to VLC.

Does it try to playback using the QuickTime plugin?

It does use the Quicktime plugin by default, but it will not use VLC if the Quicktime plugin is disabled.

Try reinstalling VLC (possible that QuickTime overrode VLC's settings in e.g. an update).

I've uninstalled and reinstalled VLC but with no success.

The QuickTime plugin appers to override the VLC. Enter in to the Firefox address bar:
about:plugins

And you shold see a list of all the installed plugins. The "video/quicktime" MIME type is the one for MOV, and in my case I have both a QuickTime and VLC Multimedia Plugin ones, of which the QuickTime seems default to first.

I tried modifying pluginreg.dat in the Firefox profiles however that did not seem to have an effect. Try uninstalling QuickTime (if you wish to) since it is presumably that which is the cause of the conflict.

Cheers, Arite.
