Weird subtitle problem.

Postby sooojaded » 24 Aug 2008 12:25

I'm using VLC media player 0.8.6i. I have a movie in .vob format and a subtitle file in .srt format. When i play the movie this is what happens.

1
time ---> time
aaa (This subtitle does not appear in the movie)

2
time ---> time
bbb (This subtitle does not appear in the movie)

3
time ---> time
ccc (This subtitle appears in the movie)

Basically what I'm trying to say is that some subtitles appear but some don't appear.

I posted this problem in videohelp forum and they suggested that i downloaded the nightly builds of VLC (VLC media player 0.9.0). I downloaded it, the problem does not change. But this version has an option to load subtitles. I loaded the same srt file and the problem is fixed (ALL subtitles appear when they should)

I also tried playing the movie with another player and the subtitles work fine. I concluded that the problem lies in the VLC media player itself.

But I do love VLC because it worked for me many times until now. I don't wish to switch to another player because VLC is compatible with most kinds of media. Call me lazy, but, is there a way to fix this so that I don't have to load subtitles every time I play any .vob file?

By the way, I am using Windows Vista, and I heard that VLC is not fully compatible with Windows Vista. Could it be the source of the problem?

Someone reported something similar earlier.

If you open Tools -> Messages.. and set Verbosity to 2 before playback (nightlies), you get same log with both subtitle open styles?

Under Tools --> messages. I saw this message before setting the Verbosity to 2:
main info: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
main error: option sub-original-fps does not exist
a52 info: A/52 channels:1 samplerate:48000 bitrate:192000
main error: subpicture heap is full
main error: subpicture heap is full
main error: subpicture heap is full
main error: subpicture heap is full
main error: subpicture heap is full
main error: subpicture heap is full
main error: subpicture heap is full

I got different logs. When I set the Verbosity to 2, the log is full of messages which are too long to place here.
What does this mean?

You can use code tags to paste long logs or paste
http://paste.videolan.org/

main error: subpicture heap is full seems to indicate that there is a bug.

In my test it seems that 2 first subtitles don't appear and last one is also missing.

Hi, I reported the bug in paste.videolan.org (twice, not sure how to delete).
I'd also like to highlight that after I load the subtitles, the pause button changes to play button even though I did not press the pause/play button and I cannot pause the movie after that. That would be another bug in 0.9.0 as well?
Another bug I'd like to point out is that if I try to seek different parts of the video, sometimes the subtitles will play as though they started from the beginning without skipping or seeking.

Paste is only for pastes. For bug reporting, use trac.

Hello I used the new version 0.8.6i to play a .ts file. The subtitle only flashed for less than a second and gone. I tried to set frames to 10 seconds under open file > use subtitles file > advanced settings but that did not change anything. Is there anything I can do to make the subtitle showing smoothly? My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium. Please advise. Thanks.
