Making videos look better - less pixelised, more colors?

Hi,

Well, i always use VLC to play everything... but a few days ago i accidentally opened something with windows media player, and i noticed the movie looked a lot better there...
So, i made 2 screenshots to compare it

As you can see, (like on the edges on her face) WMP is like, anti-aliasing it, and her face and hair look more colorful...

Is there a way to get VLC to anti-aliase my movies too? and maybe like WMP add extra color to it? in VLC it all looks greyish...

Yes VLC can look slightly more "washed out" than e.g. WMP and PowerDVD. This is presumably since the latter two enhance the colours/have colour management.

What program/film is that out of interest?

Try a 0.9.1 test build and see if the colours appear the same:

You could try rasing the post-processing quality by going to:
Settings >> Preferences... >> Input / Codecs >> Other codecs >> FFmpeg

And (tick "Advanced options") raise the "Post processing quality". Press save, restart VLC and then try a video.

Also - ensure that when making the comparision only one media player is running - don't take screenshots of e.g. VLC when WMP is open also since this can affect it.

Ok, i've downloaded the 0.9.1 test build...
I 'enhanced' the colors in VLC now, by using The Extended settings, and tweaking with the saturation, and stuff...

Edit: Oh, btw, the program is Supernatural S01E19

Eehm.. sorry, i couldnt find the Post processing quality settings, (Nor the 'Advanced options') in 'Other codecs >> FFmpeg'... are you sure its there?

Oh right - the post processing settings was for 0.8.6. I was just saying try a 0.9.1 builds to see if that was improved at all. You need to be using a 0.8.x build for post-processing at the moment AFAIK.

Oh.. never mind.. lol... I just downloaded PowerDVD, and that works great too (can change aspect ratio, to play movies in full screen for example (unlike WMP :/))
Also changed the Video enhancement to vivid there, and it looks great...

So.. thanks for mentioning PowerDVD... lol... i'll use this instead ^.^ (Sorry VLC)

About post-processing: it's currently broken in the 0.9.* branch but should be fixed (maybe it'll make it in our first official binary release ... maybe in the next one).
