total noob

hey all, im a total noob to Linux os and have went out and bought my self an acer aspire one, i want to install or add vlc so i can play avi files, as the standard media play cant seem to do it. i had a look around the site but cant find anything that comes close to what im looking for. so any info will be greatly appreciated!

select your OS from here and conitnue following the directions specified. Can u mention which linux distribution you are using any version etc. !!!
