what wrong with VLC

Postby kobolds » 20 Jul 2008 22:09

I having some problem playing HD movie with vlc on my laptop (C2D , Nvidia 8600mGT) . I try every suggestion found on this forum but no use . so I have no choice but using alt player .

here what happen . on my laptop I install 2 OS (winxp sp3 and opensuse 11)

on winxp sp2
1. when play HD movie using vlc , I keep getting frame skip . but when using mpc , no problem(smooth)

on opensuse 11.
1. I can't play .mkv file . it give error recognize format . no idea why even though Matroska installed
2. when I play HD movie using vlc , I get frame skip . but when I using mplayer , no problem (smooth)

some of the post I read in this forum suggest that because hardware issue . but on same hardware , 2 different os , 2 different player able to do the job how come VLC couldn't .

because of this I have no choice but to give up using VLC . I have been using VLC for years and really like it . but if VLC couldn't keep up to date , I have no choice but abandon it . my last hope is on VLC 9 to resolve all this issue .

Try skipping the loop filter:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=42328

Also try one of the nightly builds of VLC:
http://nightlies.videolan.org/

H.264 decoding in VLC isn't as fast as some other decoders such as the proprietary CoreAVC (which might be what MPC is using).

I done that before but no use . is coreAVC the reason why MPC and mplayer can decode better?

I did some test by changing mplayer default codec to FFmpeg and try to play the movie . mplayer give some error("INVALID FRAME SIZE") while playing . even so it still able to play smooth .

AFAIK MPlayer by default also used the H.264 decoder from libavcodec. MPC uses directshow codecs, of which CoreAVC is an installable one, so that is dependant on whether CoreAVC is installed or not presumably.

Did you try VLC 0.9.0 with (in the same location in the Preferences as 0.8.x) "Skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding" set to "All"?

You could also try increasing the file cache by going to (in Preferences with Advanced options):
Input / Codecs >> Access modules >> File

And raise the "Caching value in ms" to e.g. "2000".

Cheers, Arite.

no use .

i try vlc 9 test 1 for opensuse 11 .still the same . the part where the frame skip occur same as vlc 8 .

look like for time been i will just use mpc or mplayer to play hd movie .

i believe the problem is with vlc , cause my laptop (c2d 2.2ghz, 2gb ram , Nvidia 8600mGT 512mb, swap file disable) has more than enough capability to play HD movie. and the warning message (frame skip because machine slow) from vlc is such a joke, the cpu usage is not even 10%.
