Display Image

There is any way to use VLC to display image?
In specific we use vlc to display various kind of video file, but in case of error we produce a specific image with an error message.
Can vlc display this image and stay on it ?

Open fake://path/to/the/image

What i need it's a way to display with vlc an image from an URl, like http://../...png not in local...
