wmv problem & "--codec dmo" switch

Hi everyone! I'm having a problem while playing wmv files. When I skip forwards or backwards, the video becomes distorted (pixels from, apparently, the previous frames remain unchanged while in other parts of the screen the video plays normally) for a few seconds. I read some of the previous messages and used the "--codec dmo" switch but it didn't work. Is there another solution? Or just using the switch is not enough?

Any help will be appreciated because I like vlc a lot and it's not convenient to use windows media player for the wmv files. Thanks in advance!

How are you using the switch? If you open up command prompt and enter:

cd "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC" vlc --codec dmo FILE

Where "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC" is the location of VLC and FILE is the location of the *.wmv file.

If there is still no difference then what are the codecs used etc. in the WMV file?

No, there is stil no difference. According to GSpot, the codec of the wmv file is WMV3 [WMP v9 (VC-1 Simple/Main)].

I just installed Windows Media Player 10 and used the switch exactly as Arite suggested but the problem persists...

Does this make any sense?

According to the log VLC uses dmo. debug: found DMO: WMVideo Decoder DMO so I don't think your issues is fixable on current version. Maybe nightlies work better.

And enter e.g.:

And press enter. Then in the commandline, assuming you have VLC installed in the default location, enter:

Where INPUT_FILE is the file you wish to play.

Yep, I've noticed the same behaviour with WMV3.
No problem so far with WMA2 though.

This problem still exists in the latest nightly (trunk-20090328-2307).

To recreate open a WMV then simply drag the position scroll bar back on forth.

The use of DMO codecs is broken in VLC 1.0.0 test builds. It only works with VLC 0.9.x.
The devs are aware about this issue so we just have to be patient

Please note this issue occurs both with and without the --codec DMO switch (use of desired codec is confirmed through Tools->Codec information).

It appears (and I appreciate this is a subjective measure) many times worse when NOT using the --codec DMO switch.
