No 'wmap' sound support yet in 0.8.6h?

I get an error when I try and play a WMV file in VLC, and I was hoping that the new version would fix this, but I still get the following error:

main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `wmap'. VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

The file works fine with QuickTime though.

ffmpeg doesn't support wmap and it's not implemented through dmo yet either (for windows) so it won't work on windows/linux atm.

Yeah but unfortunately that isn't enough, this ticket dates back 2 years and is still valid. I've not seen wmap work on any of my systems using dmo (WMP and WMF being part of security updates): http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/883

If you are prepared to upload that you could use e.g. Megaupload which allows up to 500MB, although admittedly 400MB+ is a bit overkill for a sample.

I'm using 'i' and it still does not work.

It will play but there's no sound. Quicktime can play (with plugin). As can Windows Media Player for mac, and WMV Player. And Switch can convert this from wma to something I can listen to, like mp3 or FLAC, etc...

But as stated before, it works fine in OS X if you view the video in QuickTime Player with the Flip4Mac plugin installed or using MicroSoft's WMP. Even the newest Intel Nightly Builds of VLC (as of 30.08.08) still don't work, as you get video, but no sound.

Flip4Mac and WMP work since they use and support most/all Windows Media formats and codecs. VLC media player supports some natively using e.g. FFmpeg, however other newer codecs such as the later Windows Media formats are not yet since there are no open source libraries for them yet. In the Windows (and Linux through Wine) the dmo plugin allows for the use of proprietary DLLs such as the ones required for those Windows Media formats. This is no, however, supported on OS X.

Flip4Mac is a proprietary/commercial component specifically meant for QuickTime on OS X so unlikely that it would be supported. A less-specific method using Win32 DMO DLLs on OS X would be more viable.

It works on Linux though Wine as far as I know using the --enable-loader switch with the DLLs in /usr/win32 (see here), however DMO is reportedly untested on OS X. Could be possible through Darwine, the Mac OS X port of Wine (probably need to be compiled with --enable-loader as well).

Another approach is to delegate the work to Quicktime, and then benefit from whatever components have been added to it. This is something that Movist (free & open source) does. In fact from having looked at this it allows you to decided whether to use Quicktime or ffmpeg for certain media types. While this could be doable in VLC, it would depend on how this approach would fit in the grand scale of things (architecture and philosophy) , since VLC is designed to be a cross-platform solution.

I played today a movie with vlc 1.1-pre2 but without sound. In mplayer it works with... Im using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx...

I installed the debian package w32codecs, which extract the dlls to /usr/lib/codecs - but VLC not use them?
