VideoLAN Forum style

Postby Arite » 27 May 2008 22:41

Thought I would make my first topic :P.

I decided to see what the Forum would look like with the Main VideoLAN site header/navigation bar as a replacement to the current prosilver one. I made a prosilver-based style (called "videolan") with a duplicate of the prosilver imageset, template and theme.

Modifying some of the CSS and the overall-header template this is what I got (click for full size image):

Image

The width for the main div (wrap) is 86% to match the main site, and the min-width is 950px so as to not make the page to thin for lower resolution monitors/browser windows. Alternatviely the main page body width could be kept the same and only the main header/nav-bar width adjusted to match the main site.

Just an idea since that would allow for easier navigation between the forum/main site/planet etc. (not that that is particulary necessary though - the current prosilver theme is perfectly suited too).

Cheers, Arite.

OK, nice :).

Here is another screenshot with just the header bar with a width of 86% of the page (to match the main VideoLAN website). The main page body is the same as with the current theme (20px padding on left and right):

Image

That way the forum is identical save for the header bar.

I can package the style whenever if you/anyone wants to try it out - if anyone has any ideas for improvements just say.

The shouting cone or the new talking cone/cone with quotes that is used now? Where would you suggest it should go?

Intergration of Forum with Official Site

Postby MetalheadGautham » 18 Jun 2008 22:12

I noticed that the forum has NO link to the official videolan website on the headder. Can you please link to the main site in the headder so that we don't always need to backspace in the address box to reach to there ?

videolan Forum Style 0.0.1

Here is the download link (*.tar.bz2):
http://www.mediafire.com/?oum9ejfvvgx

I went for the second screenshot style because personally I prefer having the full width of the browser, not 86% of it. As a result there is a slightly different page structure - #wrap has no padding, #header has a width of 86% and #wrap_main has 20px padding for left and right.

The package contains a videolan imageset, template and theme. The imageset is a duplicate of the prosilver one, however was created in case e.g. VideoLAN Forum topic icons etc. are made (also will mean that any later phpBB3 updates to the prosilver style will not affect it). The template and theme both have minor modifications - primarily to overall_header.html, overall_footer and common.css. There is the addition videolan.css.

The directory "videolan" can just be placed directly in FORUM_ROOT/styles/ and then installed etc. via the ACP.

Cheers, Arite.

I guess so :). /* Start of ramblings */ Just installing it will make it an optional theme which can be selected alongside prosilver (the default) and subsilver2 so won't affect anyone except users who select the theme. The user selected style can be overidden but thet means only one style can be selected for the whole board regardless of the user preferences. Only trouble is making a style the default theme doesn't really change anything since each previously registered user is still associated with e.g. prosilver (I think this might include guests too). /* End of ramblings */

So any updates Arite ?

How about replacing the current default theme with this one (replacing even the name), and naming the current default theme as the new one, so that the problem with all registered users and guest still ending up with the old theme will not arise ?

PS: Adding a line Go Back to index page right in the middle of the top banner would have been enough too :P

Yes that is one option. Also I think for each style an individual template, imageset and theme can be assigned since they are interchangable sub-components of the main style. So the "videolan" imageset, theme and template could be assigned to the prosilver style IIRC. Overriding the default style would effectively do that too, just any users who might be using the subsilver2 style (which I think it very few) or prefer the default prosilver style would be forced to use the overriding theme too.

However first it should be tested out first by e.g. just installing it so that it can be selected as a custom style for individual users via the UCP. If j-b want to try it that is - the forum can be left as is too since it operates perfectly :).

I suppose you could - never actually tried the merging of topics out myself before. Although it probably wouldn't flow very well. Probably better to e.g. lock this topic and continue in the other one if you like :).

I agree, looks a bit plain without the cone. There is a VideoLAN favicon though now :).

Where would you want the cone?

EDIT: Just noticed padding is to small on the bottom - will fix later if other modifcations are made.

It just doesn't feel VideoLAN-ish without the cone for some reason, it's nice that Artie added the other stuff though.

For once MetalheadGautham thinks CloudStalker makes some sense.
MetalheadGautham feels that it would have been enough to add the same top bar links to the old theme without modification.

And yes, this one with a cone will ofcource, be the #1. 8)
