I've searched, but cant find the answer (http stream)

Postby samseed101 » 26 Sep 2004 22:40

I spent the last hour searching the forums here, and I used the "search" feature, but I can't seem to find any exact information.

I want to be able to stream AVI or Mpeg1 files using http. In the future, I want to be able to stream live TV broadcasts, but for now I am just trying to find a way to stream the file. I have software set up so that I can use my PC as a webserver (not sure if it is needed), and I have VLC (obviously). I figured out how to stream using WMP (MMSH) and that seems to work fine. But when I try to use HTTP instead, nothing happens. Most likely, it's because I'm not sure what I am supposed to do. Some questions I have:

-- Does it matter what port I use?

-- When entering settings, under HTTP, should I enter an IP address? and if I do, should I enter the WAN IP address (actual IP address assigned by DSL modem), should i put localhost, or should I put the IP address that is assigned by the router (LAN IP address). Right now, I just want to get this to work on the LAN and will worry about expanding later.

-- Is it something I am doing wrong with the output? I have tried selecting both mpeg1 and AVI, but I cant seem to connect to the stream using IE.

-- Do I need to run the software to allow my PC to act as a webserver? I have tried both ways, but may be missing something.

The server seems to be streaming the video, or at least doing something with it. I can see the timer and can see that the movie is apparently playing. I just cant figure out how to view it.

Again just as a recap at what I am trying to do at the moment: I want to stream a video from my PC so that It can be viewed as an Mpeg1 or AVI (real time) using Internet Explorer or any other browser.

Thank you for any help.

I looked at that, but it really didn't make much sense to me, lol. I think it's because I am changing the settings via the GUI. Thse help pages appear to be geared toward the command line parameters that can be changed.

well it depends on what you want to do...

Do you want to host videoclips that can be accessed on demand? Then just put them on a webserver and access them with a browser. You don't need VLC for this.

Do you want to stream the clips LIVE? then create a mmsh stream that WMP can play, but don't expect that your browser will understand these streams.
