Syntax : -v, -vvv and --vout

Hello!

VLC is nice in giving numerous options and syntax rules, but it is not clear what they do.
Can somebody explain the differences in the various expressions one can use on a command line :
-v
-vvv
-vout
--vout
--vvv
and other combinations...

-v (verbose error reporting)
-vvv equals -v 2 (full verbosity)
--vout or -V, not -vout (video out)

Do a 'vlc--longhelp --advanced | more', and you'll be be presented with all the 3500+ lines of gory details.
Press space to advance a screenful at a time, q to quit the pager (more).

Do a 'vlc--longhelp --advanced > ~/vlchelp.txt' to save all this to a text file for perusal on days with nothing better to do.

You can also do a 'vlc -l' to see what modules your VLC binary is compiled with,
as well as a 'vlc --advanced -p <module>' to get help on a specific module.

I guess that should be 'on days with plenty of time to spare'.
I don't want to imply that getting to know VLC isn't worthwhile...

Certainly not!

Could you be a bit more precise :

-vvv or -V defines the output stream for VLC
-v 0|1|2 defines the verbosity level, which has nothing to do with VLC output
This meaning I can put both -vvv and -v in one line, giving two different orders to VLC, without confusion ?

Why not -vout ? This seams to be a correct syntax...

By the way, I am also looking for some explanations about the transcode options. When I want to define output height and width, I never get what I want, which is in some cases cropping, in some other resizing (with or without macosx-stretch). I guess I do not give enough precise options to achieve the exact result.
For example, I have some avi movies which appear vertically stretched whenever I open them on my tv. I want to "unstretch" or resize them to get a correct display.
Could you give me some examples of correct syntax in these different situations ? many thanks!

-vvv or -v 2 (maximum error reporting verbosity level), not output stream.
Using both -v and -vvv is superfluous, probably causing errors.

--sout (with argument chain) denotes output stream.

--vout is a GN-style flag/option and has no single-line alternative.

As for the syntax pertaining to dimensions, I have no immediate answer.
