I have been using the VLC media player for quite some time now and finally found the frequent crashes unbearable already. After using the player for quite some time, say ~1 hr, the application frequently crashes with the following dump:

I am running on an Ahtlon 64-X2 based system with 4GB RAM, and Windows XP SP2. I searched the forums and tried the following based on the recommendations of other users:

1. Try to install the latest nightly build version.
2. Rename the "plugins" directory, run vlc.exe, revert the "plugins" directory, and then run vlc.exe again.
3. Installed a hotfix for msvcrt.dll from Microsoft support.

To note, I am using an nVidia GeForce 7300GS graphics card with a TV hooked up as a secondary display. I usually play my videos with the video overlay mode activated so that I can use the PC while the video is running in the background.

Does it crash if you only play audio? Does changing video output module help?

I haven't tried both options. I will give them a try and let you know. BTW, what would be the difference in selecting a different video output module? Which one is the recommended setting?

Changing the video output module (once VLC is retarted) changes the type of video output which is displayed on the screen. For XP the recommended one is ordinarily DirectX video output which is, as far as I know, is the Default one. If DirectX is problematic then OpenGL is a good alternative.

Try resetting your preferences and cache files by going to:
C:\Documents and Settings\(Your username)\Application Data

And delte the "vlc" folder.

Hi there,

I tried changing the video output module and clearing the preference cache. So far, the only setting where I haven't had any crashes so far would be using the OpenGL output option. However, there seems to be a problem with using OpenGL and video overlay (full screen) mode because I only get a blank video (black) on the secondary display (conventional TV) .

Any thoughts on this though? I think that I can use the OpenGL option for good and it would be nice if full screen video overlay mode works fine. I am using a GeForce 7300GS graphics card BTW, along with the drivers that came with it. I tried to upgrade to the latest Forceware drivers but can't seem to get it to work properly with my conventional TV.

Yes, unfortunately. Even if the signal type has been set to M/NTSC, it looks as though a PAL signal is still being sent to the TV and thus, producing a distorted picture/video.

Due to more mails with attachments to open with VLC I downlaoded VLC. I have Windows XP and my antivirus is AVG free edition. When I like to open via VLC the same way as with mediaplayer I get the message: "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel". As a computer barbarian I still could find control panel and folder options, but I don't know what to do where (general, view, file types) and what. Please help.

I have had audio crashes with an application error similar to the OP. I am reporting in this thread because I have similar hardware to the OP. There is a thread a few days previous to this on "wxwidgets" crashes that hasn't had a reply yet. That poster stated that Playlist | Repeat All seemed to trigger his problem. My Dr. Watson (below) appears to have caught a wxwidgets fault, which I have experienced intermittently in streaks. When VLC works, it works well.
