VLC Crashes for 10.3.9

Postby climbbum » 03 Apr 2008 06:07

Hey All!

So I have been using VLC for a few years now with no problem, I still have Mac OSX Panther 10.3.9. A couple weeks ago I updated to the new version (.08e) and suddenly it didn't work anymore. It opens fine and starts playing a little but of the sound for the video (the new DVD-like screen comes up and just stays black) and after a couple seconds the program crashes and the OS brings up the Program has unexpectedly quit dialog box and asks me if I want to send the info to Apple. So just now I downloaded the new 0.8f release and the same thing happens!!! I am really bummed as I use VLC all the time. I have erased the Preferences both Manually and using the included program multiple times with both versions and it appears the same.

Can anyone help me???

Thanks a ton!
Billy

I'm having the same problem with .8.6f (OS 10.3.9). VLC "unexpectedly quits" after a couple seconds. I downgraded to .8.6b which works OK, my only problem with it is that it usually won't quit properly. When I try to quit, it churns a bit, than unexpectedly quits. I'm used to it. But at least it plays the videos OK.

Generally, VLC *does* run on 10.3.9, but it has been more and more buggy since 0.8.6. The last version that runs okay on my system is 0.8.6c. Everything else after that has been unusable. I keep trying new versions, but it's not getting better. 0.8.6.f has the usual quit-crasher (doesn't exit cleanly), along with newly introduced stuttering audio and the "video window appears with 50% chance, or doesn't" introduced in 0.8.6e. Also new is that full screen mode produces only the full screen controller, but no video. VLC is clearly not tested enough on 10.3.9, if at all. I would suggest declaring it "10.4 and up", and "Panther users download older version here..." It's just no use.

I just learned about VLC and downloaded vlc 0.8.6f. It doesn't play anything except a few seconds of audio and then it crashes. This is true of many types of video files "wmv" ; quicktime. I'm using OS 10.3.9
