libASS Subtitle support.

Postby bmfrosty » 14 Feb 2007 22:58

This was previously discussed in the topic below:

viewtopic.php?t=31824

LibASS is an opensource SSA/ASS library that produces subtitles very close to the ones produced by vobsub and gabest's subtitle libraries. It's uses freetype and fontconfig.

Since the original post about it, it's been segregated into it's own library that's available as a tarball at sourceforge:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/libass/

Is there any chance that VideoLAN will be using it in the future?

On a related note, for those of us that run OS-X, will we ever see versions of VideoLAN with statically linked freetype and/or fontconfig?

Yes, VLC media player might use that library. IT has been discussed on the main dev mailing list. Someone has tried to begin to see if this is possible. Give him a hand !

I think the subtitles render isn't very good on vlc :

Whereas mplayer is really good :

It would be cool to have something like this in vlc.

hi there,

I'm wondering what I have to do to activate libass when compiling vlc by myself. I'm using ubuntu 7.10 and got the latest sources from nightlies.videolan.org (for some reason git doesn't work for me) because the .deb packages for gutsy-i386 didn't work for me. I couldn't find find any option in the configuration script to enable libass support, there is nothing that looks promising for me in the config.log as well. VLC runs after the compile but the subtitles aren't any diffrent than they were in 0.86. Maybe I totally misunderstood this thread and there is no libass support in the nightlies yet? Maybe I made another mistake?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!
