playing videos through a home network

Hi,
I have a notebook and a desktop computer which are conected by a home network. When I play videos in the notebook that are stored in the desktop computer, the movies tend to freeze for some moment (fraction of a second) every five minutes or so. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
The two computers have windows xp with sp2, and the vlc version is v8.6c.

I do the same exact thing, got all my movies on my PC, and both my roomates watch them in their rooms from their pc and mac laptops.
Works like a charm, but you have to go to the viewing computer's VLC, click on SETTINGS -> PREFERENCES, click on "ADVANCED OPTIONS" in the lower right corner,
Then go to: INPUTS / CODECS -> ACCESS MODULES -> FILES

And change the Caching value to something higher. The higher you put it, the more the viewing laptop will buffer the movie (which means it will take it longer to start, but it would be more proof to connection interruptions)
I recommend starting from 3000, if that works well try going to 2000, if not go up to 4000 ... you get the drift.

i have a similar setup as described above and i have tried the INPUTS / CODECS -> ACCESS MODULES -> FILES method and increased to 5000ms but vlc still hangs. pretty consistently it tends to completely stop/freeze around 30min in. vlc stops loading the video entirely, becomes unresponsive and i have to force quit and start all over. the frustrating thing is that WMP11 sometimes tends to have less problems when it comes to this, but it just sucks in everything else. anything else i can do?

also, is there any way that i can have an immediate pause instead of having to wait 5 seconds for a video to pause? when resuming i understand having to wait the 5 seconds but i dont understand why there needs to be such a delay in pausing.

VLC is streaming player so that is why it works different than other players Could you open View -> messages and see what it says when it freezes.

And change the Caching value to something higher.

Tried that to view 'Lost' episodes (on a NAS in the LAN) on my wireless laptop, but I keep getting this :

"PTS is out of range (<some number>), dropping buffer " (or "clearing out") and
"late picture skipped (<number>)"

At 1200 it's reasonable, but over 1500 it gets worse ; video hangs for seconds ...

Funny thing is, for streaming it seems to work a lot better (caching that is) than for playing back directly ... ?!
When I stream the same video to the wireless client, there's hardly any stutter (no lost frames or buffers), but I see this message on the streaming PC :

but everyting sounds OK.

no i am not playing .png . i checked all of the files and they are all .avi . i dont know why it would come up .png . this is over a network like i stated above. thanks

I am guessing you installed skin by right clicking it and that is why it extracted skin files to temp folder (I was too lazy to Google up those filenames before, sorry about that). Those errors/messages aren't related to playback so could you do more log digging?
