Operating system, version of VLC?

Try opening View -- Messages, before opening the movies. See what Error message is reported.

this is the error message:

quicktime error: cannot initialize QT
main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `samr'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

It's a variant of Quicktime.
There is Quicktime support in vlc, it looks like, though I'm not sure if it's in the official release.. Perhaps try the newer 0.8 test1 release.

and samr is amr audio, which VLC doesn't support. It looks like you are actually trying to play 3GPP content. Though this is very similar to MP4, it's not exactly the same, and VLC does not 100% support it.

Install QuickTime and try to open the clip with QuickTime player.

By the way, there is an open source decoder (maybe even encoder) for AMR-NarrowBand available from 3GPP, as far as I know. And you could have a look at the GPAC project on SourceForge which offers decoding of .3gp files in their Osmo4 player and also muxing of these audio tracks with MP4Box. MPEG4IP has also added handling of .3gp files in mp4creator, and Nokia offers a free transcoding application and SDK for developers supporting the .3gp container and video/audio formats including H.263 and AMR as well as MPEG-4 Video Simple Profile and AAC.

These formats probably will become more widespread in the future with their implementation in many mobile phones from different manufacturers.

the AMR code that is available is reference code and part of the specification of 3GPP which is under license.

Therefor this code cannot be distributed in a GPL application.
3gpp files are already handled by VLC.
