Ugly subtitles?

Postby DaVince21 » 05 Mar 2008 18:13

This has been bothering me for a while now: under the Linux version of VLC, the subtitles are always very ugly. First, it took me about 15 minutes to find a font that's not blurry and actually fits for videos with resolutions. The fonts would only look good if I use double width borders around them, too.

Right now my subtitles are decent enough, but compared to other media players things stay pixelated (on lower-res videos) and inconsistent. It seems that the text rendering adapts to the video's size, but this is actually a bad thing for the subtitle text's quality.

So my question was: is better subtitle font support in progress or not? If not, I wonder why not, and why no one complained before since it's so difficult to have it look decentish.

On a somewhat related note: some subtitles in MKVs will sometimes display multiple subtitles, but they overlap if that happens, making the text difficult to read. Will this be fixed in a future version?

Still working on it? I have the same problem on Windows. The subtitles displays with the same resolution as the source video, but should rather be displayed in the resolution of the window or screen.

Yes it's a major flaw of VLC since the beginning, a core misconception.
But it should be finally fixed in v1.2, at least that's what I've been told. Fingers crossed :)
