Is there a way to auto select when you have 5.1 audio?

For all my movies that have 5.1 surround audio streams I have to go and manually change the audio device to 5.1 every time. VLC sets it to stereo by default. There's an option in the audio preferences called force detection of dolby surround but that doesn't do anything.

VLC uses same setting that Windows or soundcard control panel has chosen.
