Canon HG10 - Can VLC Playback .MTS?

Postby yesurbius » 20 Jan 2008 19:30

I am wondering if VLC can play back MTS files, or what the progress is like on development...

I purchased a Canon HG10 HD camcorder .. When I bring the video into iMovie, it is never the full size, and it looks horrible - I see interlaced lines all over the place, or poor image quality if I put it to 24p mode.

I downloaded Canon's HG10 sample video and it looks NOTHING like the output I am getting. So my guess is that iMovie 08 is doing a very bad job of importing these videos from the device.

I'm looking for another software package that I can use just to test whether it is iMovie or the camera. Playing the .MTS files raw in VLC is an option.

I tried playing one of the .MTS files .. I had to open the file as a pipe .. the video had a split second of motion, then went to a washed out screen - but the audio was there.

I have also gotten an HG10, and having a terrible time trying to get the clips into my computer. The software that came with it doesn't seem to do the trick. Any ideas?

The links below are for a .mts and .m2ts files created by a cannon hg10. The .m2ts was created by the provided software from cannon. The .mts is the original.

OK. Both of the provided Videos play fine in the development versions of VLC. Next release will have it.

Thanks. Is there a projection as to when the next release will be available?

You download nightly builds of 0.9.0 here:

As for the release date... as far as I know there isn't one yet. When it is ready :).

Cheers, Arite.

There doesn't seem to be a Mac OS X intel nightly build currently.

The latest nightlies (0.9) will begin to play the MTS files off of my Canon Vixia HF-10 Camcorder, but it starts to choke about 3 seconds in. The release version (0.8.6f)chokes about half a second in.

Are there any settings or tricks I can try to get the files to play back smoothly? I can't find any other options to play these files on the Mac side with the exception of Toast Video Player, which only plays them back at about 50% frame rate (very stuttery). Transcoding with iMovie defeats the purpose of a SDHC camera since the import is slower than real-time and the transcoding takes about 10X more space.

My hardware: Macbook Pro 2.6/4 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD.

Thanks!
