Hi,

I wanted to try a recent nighlty builds today 20080210 and I noticed something strange.
I open vlc and select a video (one xvid anime movie and one episode of 24 - original dvd), vlc crashes (libfreetype_plugin.dll) but continues to read the movie unless I check the button "Fermer".
Is it a general problem with the latest build?
Do you need me that I make a ticket?

I made a few test and there is no crash when I deselect video and I tried allmost video output mode (Dx, Dx3D, OpenGl, ...).

My config: Xp sp2 - A64 3000+ - X800Pro (Catalyst 7.12) - 1GB ram - Default option enabled on vlc

libfreetype is there to display Subtitles, OSD, File Name on start etc. To avoid the crashing problem, you can simply delete libfreetype_plugin.dll form the plugins folder. You can optionally download this version of the dll, which shouldn't crash.

The last couple of nightly builds have had a few problems with the playlist. The playlist can no longer be embedded into the interface and also it's inoperable. Items that are loaded into VLC work but don't display at all in the playlist. K. 8)

Hi

I don't know if it has been reported but the nightly builds seem to have problems handling some dvds:

Test config is - Win XP SP2 - French - RCP free drive - 24 Season 5 zone 1
=> With vlc 0.8.6.d: runs fine
=> With nighly: buggy screeen + freeze

I don't know if you use the same core ffdshow tryout but the video is buggy too whenever I use latest ffdshow tryout + media player classic

Note: 24' Box is marked "copy protected".

I can make a ticket if you feel it has some kind of interest.

Most of the recent nightly builds seem to work a little better then usual but what happened to the embedded playlist? it was so much better then having it separated. So basically CloudStalker's question is: is this temporary or will it stay the way that it currently is?

I am glad that you find those more stable.

This is a temporary issue that I will address.

I have further news about my problem.

It appears that vlc 0.8.6.d doesn't need that I select a zone on my drive configuration whereas vlc 0.9 needs it.
It is now well functionning after checking "Région 1" on my device manager.

My guess is that this problem will concern all the people buying dvd which are not on their original zone. (for instance european buying us dvd)

A tad more stable. :P Unfortunately the seek bar is out of whack most like due to these strange delays in both responsiveness and when closing VLC. Other parts of it work better then usual though. Sorry about all of that, just when you bring your hopes up CloudStalker does what CloudStalker does best and...

What is wrong with me? You know people can just zoom in and read this, so CloudStalker doesn't think that making the lettering smaller is going to help, if anything they'll be even more curious as to what all of this is and feel more inclined to zoom in. Question CloudStalker: is there anything in you that says: "don't post this! it's stupid! people are going to think that you are out of you mind (quiet voice). why is this even longer then your initial post?!".

Yeah yeah, you should be.

Edit:
It could be my computer that's causing some of the delays of VLC, it's been in a very bad condition recently.
Fairly normal post you're getting there. :P

So I'm surprised I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but to me, one of the biggest bugs in the nightlies is that if you watch a video in full screen, the interface does not come back when it stops, weather it reaches the end of the file or if you stop it manually. This isn't the intentional behavior, right?

  • Seeking with some FLAC files cause VLC to crash abruptly.
  • Crashes when attempting to play DVDs.
  • Playlist can no longer be embedded into the interface.
Um...I'll post more when I remember them.

Just another thing to report now that I'm back to testing:
  • Dragging and dropping entire folders into the player doesn't work
Ah...that's all CloudStalker has for now. :P

The two most recent builds for windows, trunk-20080403-0003 and trunk-20080403-0909, can not be launched from file association. None of the context menu options work either (add to playlist, etc).

The build before them seems to be fine.

Also, with the last several builds, I have gotten a runtime issue on close. VLC still disappears when a full screen video ends also.

Are these things worth worth reporting? or are these considered expected side effects of nightly builds?

CloudStalker just wanted to say that the nightly builds are looking good. New buttons, new functions and yes, fewer bugs. :D There are just a few things though.

(1) Whenever me close VLC it disappears from view but still seems to be running in the background. Me have to go to the Task Manager every time to kill the process first before starting a new instance. On the plus side though, the 'runtime error' message no longer appears. :)

(2) Sometimes when dragging entire folders into the player it doesn't work. Either it does nothing or warnings appear onscreen.

(3) VLC doesn't like to load large audio files. As me like to save all my CDs as ISO images, a CD as one long track, VLC doesn't bother to read it if it's over a certain length or a certain number of megabytes. It does this for any audio file type too: .wav, .flac, .ape, alac, .wmal.

Overall it's looking pretty good. 8)

I hope it bothers not too much here, but I think it fits best in here.
Cause I never can stand untill the next version is out (which makes a great player even better) I keep allways an eye on trac.
Now I have seen that in trac 0.9.0 was finished at . . . . . 2008-Aug-24 22:21:19,
source files on the ftp are from . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2008-Aug-24 22:13:20,
and the latest nighly build of 0.9.0 is from . . . . . . . . . . 2008-Aug-24 09:55.
(the differnt times confuses me a little.. I could understand if the latestet nighly is older, so i think it does not include the latest fixes which are made at the closing day)
1st thing I assume is that 0.9.0 is still in testing before release.
(ok sometimes I fool around with linux, so actually i have allready compiled stuff with a step per step manual, but I havent a clue what I have done)

ok now my questions:
1. Are there binaries of the latest version ? (as i said .. no clue from compiling) I know that they are untested and kind of beta untill then. but i am pretty sure they work fine after all the work you have put in.
2. How come the time differents? arent nighly builds after "finishing" a version?, or is it a clock syncronise problem?, maybe its meaned 09:55 PM?

P.S.: I have just seen (while I was verifing informations for this post), that a sc from 0.9.1 is avalible.
3. does that mean 0.9.0 wont be released?

P.P.S.: sorry for so nooping around, but i cant bare if i dont know what happens.

->last P.S: Great player keep the good work up.

1.2.3. There will be no 0.9.0 version, but only a 0.9.1 version. Take my builds to test those.

VLC media player versions 0.8.6i and older suffer from multiple buffer overflow vulnerabilities. Refer to our advisory for technical details. Fixes for these issues are available in VLC 0.9. We strongly recommend all users to update to this new version.
This is on the main site, But people have no idea how to download a 0.9 version since its only in Beta right now.

I'm downloading and trying the latest Nightly builds, when do you think it will be a RC? :?:
