Install/Updating to vlc-0.8.6d in Fedora Core 6

Postby Knight » 08 Feb 2008 22:45

Hello everyone,

Fairly new Linux newb here. I am running VLC vlc-0.8.6c and selected to show updates and downloaded..

vlc-0.8.6d-announce
&
vlc-0.8.6d.tar.bz2

At this point I'm not entirely sure what to do next. I've tried a few things (and gumming up some of my works I imagine) and searching the web for solutions. Is vlc-0.8.6c as high as I can go in FC6 or is there just some things I need to do and I can in fact get vlc-0.8.6d to work? If so please let me know what these steps are...

I have installed (I think..) the livna 6.1 rpm updates package and I have FreshRPMs also so I know that a potential problem there. I will try to figure out how to remove livna or something.. I'm hoping theres some command sequence I can do that doesn't involve the yum or any other autoinstally thing.. if there is a proper repository setup that would get me vlc-0.8.6d then I would be all for that to. Just a different route I guess.

Thanks for any and all input!

Use the livna repository to install VLC. Don't build it.

Per the instructions on..

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-fedora.html

I got the following..

"
# rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-6.rpm
Retrieving http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-6.rpm
warning: /var/tmp/rpm-xfer.pfHUjE: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID a109b1ec
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
package livna-release-6-1 is already installed
# yum install vlc
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Install Process
Setting up repositories
Reading repository metadata in from local files
Parsing package install arguments
Nothing to do
"

I'm wondering if because I am running Fedora Core 6 that I can't run vlc-0.8.5d and only can run vlc-0.8.5c? Or if there are some other steps I can take please let me know. I'm a very entry level linux user but I feel like I can get around ok. Thanks again for any and all assistance!

Fedora Core 6 is now "end of life" This mean you need to update to a higher version.

The easiest way to update is to reinstall Fedora 7 or Fedora 8 from a clean root partition, but you can also do a yum upgrade
(althought it is not recommanded)

Ok,

Thats kind of what I was suspecting. Perhaps there is a way if I meticulously added all the dependencies manually that is spits out when I did try one way to do it, but not quite at the point of knowledge to accomplish quickly and version c works fine enough. Thanks all for the help. ;)

Well i would not do this for myself...
You will loose your mind...

The easiest way would be to rebuild it using mock, at least a F-7 src.rpm from livna might rebuilt fine on FC-6.

Fedora guy myself
your repo's are located in /etc/yum.repos.d/ every .repo file is a repo in for yum, delete one to remove it or type yum <parameter> --disablerepo=livna

Fedora 6 is EOL (End Of Life) so it would be best to upgrade to 7 or even 8 (personal preference is 7 for stability)

but i guess i'd use a rpm-searchengine to find the proper rpm ;)

to install an rpm use rpm -ivh <location of rpm> or even yum localinstall <location of rpm> the later is prefereable for the dependencies ;)

good luck :)
