VLC crash related to libwxwidgets_plugin.dll

Postby JohnnyBob » 17 Feb 2008 13:12

(Windows XP Home SP2)
I was playing a movie from my hard drive (VIDEO_TS folder with .VOB files etc) and got this fatal error below. I have no idea what caused it, except I had previously been playing around with the many options available in VLC media player - being a relative newbie to it. Most of my prior experience is with PowerDVD5, where I have never encountered such a crash!? Is there some kind of fix available to avoid this with VLC media player in the future? Thanks.

VLC media player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience...

Can you replicate that crash? Or is it just a one time miracle?

I haven't tried to replicate it. I wouldn't know how. Like I said, it just happened while playing a movie, cause unknown. The movie was playing when, all of a sudden, VLC player crashed and gave the error message as mentioned in my original post. It hasn't happened before nor since, so, yes, it's a one time thing (so far). However I worry about one time things, which probably indicates a bug in the software. If I'm going to adopt VLC player to replace PowerDVD5, then a solution must be found. Otherwise I'll stick with PowerDVD5 which has never crashed after more than a year of extensive use.

This has been happening fairly consistently for the past couple of months as far as I can remember. VLC Player crashes if I have it running for a prolonged period of time. I get the exact same error message.

i can confirm that, too. I've several machines running vlc. On w2k it's almost stable, while the crash described appears on wxp very often. When working on the interface (e.g. selecting and starting entries in the playlist by double-click) it takes just a few tries to reproduce the crash. On the other side the skinnable interface works OK. IMHO it's a problem of the widget interface in connection with wxp.
