Having a very strange problem seeking with mkv files

Postby phantomftr » 09 Feb 2008 07:49

I'm using version .8.6d and playing H264 encoded .mkv files. They play fine on my windows XP box but I just built a new Vista PC and am having a strange problem. When I first start the PC I can only seek through about the first 5 minutes of the movie. If I try to go any farther than 5 minutes the sound and picture will cut out but the time will still move normally like the movie is still playing. If I go back to within the first five minutes the video and audio kick back in and all is fine. As time goes on, even if the VLC player is closed, I can seek through more and more of the movie without having it blank out. After the PC is on for about an hour I can seek through about 1 hour of a movie before it blanks out.

This is a very weird problem and I cant think of anything that would cause this to happen. I have tried everything I can think of to solve it from completely removing my sound card to installing different video card drivers and messing with pretty much every option there is in the player. If anyone has an idea please let me know because this is driving me nuts. Thanks!

I restarted my windows XP box and it does the same thing with that OS also. It only does it with H264 movies that I have encoded at 720p or higher. Its not a big deal because after the PC is running for a few hours you can seek through the whole movie no problem but its a bug you should be aware of.

Have you tried remux that MKV file? Does View -> Messages complain something?

I have the exact same problem you are experiencing,

When i try and skip through a movie, and i do View->Messages it displays:

Does it work better with nightly builds?

I have the same problem, with any .mp4 file (using the H264 codec) i tested. I will try the latest nightly release and give some feedback.

I'm unable to run any of the nightly builds on either my XP or vista PC's. I've tried downloading and running like 6 different versions and they all just hang in the taskbar unresponsive when I run vlc.exe

I have exactly the same problem as the ones above (actually I'm glad I haven't to describe the problem myself ;-) ). I use following Software:

VLC 0.8.6
Win XP Pro SP2 and Win2000 SP4, it's exactly the same in both of this

My videos are encoded this way:

MKV-Container
Vorbis Audio
XVid Video
Created with GordianKnot ==> muxed with VirtualDub

The funny thing is: With the version 0.7.2 of VLC everything works fine, I can seek in the videos without any problems, but with the actual version I have the same problem as the others. Furthermore I must say, that I tried this on five very different PCs, so it can't be a problem with the graphic adapter or something. It seems to me that VLC has a problem with certain filetypes...

PS: Sorry for my bad school english ;)

Try to remux with some other tool than Virtualdubmod.

I just remuxed one of my files with AVI-Mux_GUI-1.17.7. In VLC 0.7.2 the file was not very nice to view - it is bucking (I looked up this word, no idea if it fits her :-) ). In VLC 0.8.6 I could watch the file as before: It was playing normally, bit I still can't seek through the file. In the messages window I get messages like this:

Code: Select all

main debug: control type=5 mkv debug: seek request to -1 (0.621900%) mkv debug: seek got 3298263500 (64%) main error: decoder is leaking pictures, resetting the heap main error: picture 00D27318 refcount is -1 main error: decoder is leaking pictures, resetting the heap main error: picture 00D27318 refcount is -1 main error: decoder is leaking pictures, resetting the heap main error: picture 00D27318 refcount is -1 main error: decoder is leaking pictures, resetting the heap main error: picture 00D27318 refcount is -1 main error: decoder is leaking pictures, resetting the heap main error: picture 00D27318 refcount is -1 main error: decoder is leaking pictures, resetting the heap main error: picture 00D27318 refcount is -1 main error: decoder is leaking pictures, resetting the heap main error: picture 00D27318 refcount is -1 main error: decoder is leaking pictures, resetting the heap main error: picture 00D27318 refcount is -1
/e: The same thing with mkvtoolnix...

/e2: The nightly build from the 9th February plays and seeks fine in my mkv-Videos. I hope it'll be stable enough for daily use soon :)
