0.9.0 freezing when operating...

Postby adanecito » 29 Jan 2008 05:29

Hi All,

I just downloaded the latest nightly build of 0.9.0-svn-20080125-000 Grishenko. When I playing a video it always freezes at the same point and I have tried two separate PC's with different intel processors. It is not acting as if the audio is getting ahead of the video and losing or dropping frames it just freezes and the CPU utilization climbs to 50% and stays there. A friend has seen the same problem using the AMD64 X2 5400+ and I have seen it on a Duo Centrino T2300 and on a P4 3GHz.

WHen running the video on the duo centrino the CPU utilization is between 9 to 16% overall and drops down to 1-8%. On the P4 it went to 50% overall.

I am using the default values that came with the install and I did select the delete preferences from any previous install. I am using windows XP SP2 on the two intel PC's.

Any ideas what I can try? The video URL I am using is: http://movies.apple.com/movies/paramoun ... 1_480p.mov

Thanks,
-Tony

Just some more info. Under Media information it mentions no lost buffers or lost frames. Resolution 848x352 avc1 and mp4a codecs.

Hi All,

More research into the issue shows even after closing vlc (stop button for video does not appear to work after video freeze) using the close button in the upper right hand window frame causes the GUI to disappear but the vlc.exe still shows up in windows task manager and the CPU utilization jumps up to 55%. Not sure why vlc.exe still shows up in task manager.

There were other posts regarding high CPU usage so maybe posters did not notice vlc.exe was still in memory after they thought they closed out the app and much higher CPU utilization started to appear so when they restarted VLC the higher CPU utilization was already present?

Still no solution for getting video not to freeze.

Regards,
-Tony

Hi VLC team,

You might want to take a look at the vlc code and fix an important new bug. Seems for the nightly builds under the network tab when opening the show more options and modifying the caching size then playing the video causes the vlc player to hang. From what I could tell by looking at the customize string the option caching shows up as :http-caching=1200 but if I set it up like a command line parameter to --http-caching=1200 then when selecting play the video plays instead of hanging.

Just thought you should know.

Hi VLC,

I tired the ctrl m option and when the video froze it listed:

main error:Read error:Interrupted function call

This contineously repeats.

Any ideas of what you would like me to try??

Thanks,
-Tony

So how do I download the streaming video to my disk? I have an amd64 that does not seem to freeze so let me know how to configure vlc to save the streaming file to disk or how to use another player to save it if vlc can not do that.

Also, you might want to put more information in the error message about which function is broken and put a timer in the loop of code that the message is coming to breal the loop since it takes up alot of CPU that freezes vlc.

It is not streaming video, this is progressive download, but with redirect in .mov file. Here is a correct url: http://movies.apple.com/movies/paramoun ... _h480p.mov, file is ~56M

Thanks for the url. I will try that one.

I am not sure if you are part of the vlc team but many thanks for the feedback. So my question is how do you tell the difference and what does progressive download mean for VLC?
