Transistions Between Videos???

Postby kjacobs » 04 Feb 2008 06:25

Hi all,

Having just discovered VLC I am still learning is various functions. I was curious if there is any way (or any future plans) to adjust the transitions between videos in the playlist. Here is the senario....

We have found that VLC works well for playing background videos behind the lyrics of our worship presentation software at church. We use the loop function to play short video loops over and over. Then we will switch videos for the next song. It would be great if the transition could be a smooth fade in from one video to the next or when the same video loops. I'm not sure if that can be done or is an easy function to add. Any help or ideas would be great.

If the videos are all the same container, format, bitrate etc. it should work. If they are not it won't.

This is a known issue.

Most of the videos used for backgrounds are mpeg or wmv. Of course, I'm not sure if the bitrates, etc. are all the same. But even when looping one particular video, it would be great to have it gently fade back to the beginning when it reaches the end.

Our grand dream, of course, is to be able to run video backgrounds for song lyrics and also be able to switch to a live camera feed (or two) behind the lyrics and back to video backgrounds again with gentle fade transitions. I know VLC supports video capture, as well. A number of the commercial church lyric programs, such as Easy Worship, can do this (but at a prohibitive cost). It looks like VLC has the potential to do this and just needs the transitions added, which I'm sure is easier said than done. Anyway, it would definitely be an awesome addition.

Yes, this is a bit complex to do, because it would mean to keep the vout... Noone really worked on that so far.

I guess you are doing it fullscreen, right ?

Yes, we are doing it fullscreen, and ideally on a secondary monitor and not the primary monitor.

Have you been able to sort out the delay between the repeat of a single file looping?

I use it for ZionWorx.
A transition between clips would be great! At the moment the "least" obscure way is for me to "fade to black F10" in ZionWorx, change the video in VLC and then "show background only F11" in Zionworx.

There was a request for this feature a while back (OK about 3 years ago), but I don't know if it has been resolved?
