VLC without sound (ADPCM)

Hi, I´m new using VLC. I had a camera that save an AVI file.
I see the images / video but, no sound.
The audio format is ADPCM (ms).
Can you help me ?

Some cameras generate "broken" *.avi files, or are AVI v1.0. Try re-saving it as an *.avi (OpenDML/"AVI 2.0") *.avi file using a tool such as VirtualDub.

But, there is a way to use VLC without to do conversion ? You know, the camera generate de AVI file with audio in this format and I can´t convert all the videos I have... And with WMP 11, I play the video. So, whats is the issue ? I need to program a new plug-in for use VLC ? The only way is convert the video ?

You don't need to convert the video - just rewrite the AVI header (assuming there is the same issue as in the other thread). The problem is that the AVI format is old, broken or incompatible with VLC resulting in the time code being incorrect. So if the playing time is reported as being completely out then it is likely that you have the same issue as in the other thread.

There are other tools which can do it, but it is simple to do in VirtualDub - open the video file, select "Video >> Direct Stream Copy" and save as a new AVI file.

Thanks for the info, but at the same time I think is a lot of work... I have more than 300 files (more than 5GB) that I need to "convert" (open in virtualdub and save).
In WMP11 I can play the file with video an sound. I was trying with VLC because so many people say that is better than WMP. So I try VLC...but all my files have no sound...
I think there is better to get a plug-in (or codec) for my files in VLC that can reproduce video and sound like WMP11 do.
If you know a plug in that can do that, please tell me. If you want a programmer to do that (program a new plug.in), give some help to programing the plug-in...
Otherwise, thank you very much for the info, but for the amount of files I have, will be better to continuos use WMP.

Well just try the method out on one file to see if it works. If it doesn't then could you upload a sample file to e.g. a file host.

If it does work, then you can set up a batch conversion using VirtualDub's job control.

1. Do as you would for re-saving one file, except when you go to "File >> Save as AVI..." tick the tickbox saying "Don't run this job now; add it to job control so I can run it in batch mode". Then press "Save".
2. After that go to "File >> Job control...", and you should see you job in there.
3. Place all of the files you want to convert into one directory, and create another directory for where you want to place your output files.
4. Then in the VirtualDub Job control window go to "Edit >> Process directory...". Select the input directory followed by the output directory.
5. Then press "Start" to run the job/batch script.

If set up correctly you should get a duplicate of all the files in the input directory in the output directory, only encapsulated in the full AVI 2.0 container format.

Unfortunately, as far as I know, there isn't a "quick fix" for playing back the video with audio in VLC - the above method works and can be done for a large number of files in one batch. It may be possible to improve the AVI demuxer so that VLC is able to playback that format of AVI correctly, so if you wish to submit a patch then feel free .

The method with one file works, but the lot of files I have demand to much time for me (convert + burn CD + order the file again).
I will try to improve the demuxer (I not a specialist in this matter). In the meaning time, I still use WMP11 (that play the movie with sound without any additional conversion).

This issue has changed my opinion of VLC player. I used to view VLC player as the unconquerable media player that could play anything. This is a major chink in its armor.
