Why Does VLC Include Non-Media Extensions?

Something that has struck me as odd are the use of non-media extensions.

.ps
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PostScript

.bin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_image#.BIN.2F.CUE
http://www.iceteks.com/articles.php/binfile/1

.cue
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_image#.BIN.2F.CUE

Why does VLC use these extensions? I don't know about the rest of the world, but in the USA, these extensions are not used for media playback...

cue, and bin are data formats, that can contain video, as some dumps of VCD for example.

ps files are mpeg ps streams.

So those are media extensions.
