Can't install on Dapper

When following the instructions for installing the latest version of VLC on Dapper.

echo "deb ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/videolan/ubuntu dapper universe" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/vlc.list

I get.

bash: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/vlc.list: Permission denied

try to put sudo in front of that command. That should raise the rights you have... the /etc directory is a system configuration folder and thus not writeable by normal user accounts.

Actually I already tried that.

The instructions here worked, though they could be a little clearer.
