Better Vista file associations support/(user defined)

1. Open your starting menu
2. Open standard program
3. Choose standard program specify ("Default Programs")
4. You cannot find VLC

Please integrate this feature on VLC for better integration on Windows Vista.

2. You mean "Default Programs"?

MSDN docs, but I somehow remember that there aren't any Windows devs on project =)

I think this can be done only by modifying the installer. So this is not over-complicated, ... But I don't know yet how to do it.

Here's the basic registry settings required:
* http://zachd.com/pss/hacks/VLCforSUD.zip
That's a pretty simple registry file showing the basics of what to do for VLC. I tried this and it worked perfectly. A friend pointed me here and I figured I'd fill in the gap. That plugs you in to the Default Programs dialog, no programming required. =)

Cheers!

Clearly the player could use a minor overhaul (it writes some HKLM/HKCR keys from the app, which is bad since only the installer should have/require admin privileges) as far as more/actual Vista compatibility, but the above registry keys don't actually require you to check if you're on Vista - they simply won't be used on XP/earlier, so if you reallly want to be a little bit lazy you could just set them always. Plus that way a box that is upgraded later to Vista should Just Work, which is nice. *shrug*

Hi

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but this was the most relevant thread I could find using the search.

Trying to add VLC to the Vista 64 "default programs" list. I've tried the registry setting posted by zachdms, but unfortunately this has not added VLC to the list for me. I've restarted Vista just in case.

Does anyone have any idea of how to get VLC onto the "default programs" listing. I'm using 0.8.6

Cheers for any help.

My settings rely on a couple other minor aspects of registration that should already be handled by the VLC installer - how was VLC installed on your system? What are the subvalues under:
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients\Media\VLC\Capabilities
on your system?

Cheers for your reply.

I installed VLC using the standard windows installer to the default location. The only changes I made was to remove audio as default files. (winamp has these)

The subvalues are :-
(default) REG_SZ (value not set)
ApplicationDescription REG_SZ VLC - fill in description
ApplicationName REG_SZ VideoLAN Client

There is also a folder in Capabilities labelled FileAssociations containing 37 file types. Hope you don't want them listed :wink:

OK, and what's registered under:
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\RegisteredApplications
?
