Video device - Change default to screen 2

Postby bobcageon » 30 Jan 2007 18:29

Does anyone know if this can be set to screen 2 or TV out as default please?

I've looked through the option and am unable to find this. Also, I have searched the forums and found no similar solution posted.

Thanks kindly,

Bobcageon

Screen 2 as default works just fine now, although the setting is hidden in the preferences.

Open preferences (Apple+,)
Navigate to something like Interface > Main interface > macosx
Type in 2 in the video device text-box
Click save, quit VLC, re-open it and fullscreen should now always be on screen 2 (the one without the Apple menu)

Re: Video device - Change default to screen 2

Postby benderbends » 01 Dec 2007 03:15

i had this working on the last version of VLC.....then i upgraded to 0.8.6d and issues arise.

i probably shouldnt have deleted my prefs, but last time i had problems because i didnt delete them when updating. So this time i deleted, and now i cant get any of my settings to work.

all i want is the video to go to full screen on second monitor (HDTV connected via DVI) and put black screens on other monitors.

I have selected the normal "video Device = 2" (and i also tried every other number from -2 to 5)
I have selected black screen on all monitors
i have selected full screen on start

i can get the video to do auto full screen ok, but it always goes to the imac screen.
I even tried putting the playlist on the second screen (since i use "sofacontrol" anyways) as i read somewhere that the video will use the default screen of the playlist. This also resulted in the video going back to the imac screen.

The only way i can get the video to fullscreen on second monitor is by dragging the video window to other monitor and full screen from there. This is majorly annoying.

Any help?
i have tried saving settings, quitting, resetting prefs, etc.

another note:

if i open a video file, and go to the top menu bar for Video > devices, it shows 3 options Default, Screen 1, and Screen 2.

Screen 2 has the resolution of my TV.
But, no matter which option i choose there, it fullscreens to what ever screen my video window is on. so its not registering the options correctly.

is this a new bug? or is there something wrong with my prefs?

OK...nevermind...its a BUG in 0.8.6d ... i just reverted to an older 0.8.6c dowload, did not change any prefs files, opened my first video file and it did exactly as planned.

please fix this bug so we can update!!!!

i can confirm that i'm having the same problem with 0.8.6d. in 0.8.6c video would start playing on screen 1, i would fullscreen it and it would go to screen 2, as set in the preferences. now the when you fullscreen the video it goes full on whichever monitor the window is residing.

it also appears that the option "Black screens in fullscreen" is not working in 0.8.6d also.

machine specs (though it pry doesn't matter):
Mac Pro Quad 2.66ghz
3 gb ram
22" LCD as main monitor (screen 1)
42" HP Plasma 2nd monitor (screen 2)

Same problem here!
I also went back to 0.8.6c and fullscreen on second monitor is now good again but I cannot find the "Black screens in fullscreen" option anymore! :?:

"Black screens" could be a hidden setting (too lazy to pick it up right now). Just check the "Advanced" flag at the bottom of the window to see it.

Folks, we discovered the problem in 0.8.6d (was introduced by our Leopard video output fixes), but we didn't decide any further plans until now. Sorry, please stay tuned.

Could you guys please test this build?

http://jones.via.ecp.fr/~videolan/fpk/v ... -INTEL.dmg

Note that it is for intel-based Macs only and still a pre-release version.

This build should fix the "fullscreen shows on wrong screen" problem and may also fix the "black screen" option.

Please provide feedback, as I don't have access to 2 screens right now :)

I just tried 0.8.6d-mod-r23884 but full screening onto the second display still does not work. In fact, full screen does not even work unless default display is picked, and picking display 1 or display 2 wont allow video to be full screen.

Folks, we've been working on the bugfix release and compiled another test build for you.

You can download it here.

The password is "fullscreen". Note that this is a debug build, which includes additional code and is slower than the actual release. Please don't post the link to other forums or news sites.

Using fullscreen on screen 2 now works. However, making screen 2 the default makes absolutely no difference. It always defaulted on screen 1 regardless of what screen option is chosen (i.e. screen -2 to 5). Any hopes for a future 0.8.6d release sometime soon?

Well, VLC 0.8.6e will be released when it is ready. Sorry, stupid answer, but I can't give any scheduling details right now. It should happen within the next 2 or 3 weeks, I'd guess.

It is fixed in 0.8.6e. Please reset your preferences and try again. It will work then! :)

I've erased the preferences, uninstalled the previous version of vlc, installed the 0.8.6e release but the default screen to screen 2 does not work yet on may iMac C2D with Leopard 10.5.2
I'm back to 0.8.6c and it works fine.

First thanks for this new release!

I still have some problems on my config: (iMac 24 white C2D)

full screen on screen2 is working for me if I choose screen2 in the video/video device menu when playing a movie but not with the preference settings. Blank screen on screen1 when fullscreen is set on screen2 still doesn't work for me...

HI,

I can confirm that this problem still exists for me as well in the current build even after deleting the preference files (Core Duo iMac running 10.5, 2GB RAM, 256 MB Vram).

Fullscreen to the second monitor worked perfectly in the .c release, broke in the .d release (had to drag the window to 2nd screen and then initiate full screen) and is now broken worse in the .e release (have to now explicitly choose the display from the menu before initiating full screen... dragging the window no longer works.)

Despite this issue, thanks for the great software... I couldn't live without it.

Well, what do you mean by "worked perfectly"? We reverted back to the .c behaviour ("explicitly choose the display from the menu") because the change was backported too early.

In .c I could start VLC up, open a file, and it would immediately open on my second monitor (due to the combination in the preferences of selecting the correct video device and enabling full screen by default). All versions since for me have put full screen on the first monitor regardless of preference settings. To work around this in .d I could drag the window to the second monitor and then hit fullscreen. and it would work. In .e now dragging doesn't work and I have to choose he display from the menu every launch. I hope that explains it better.

Ok thanks. That will be adressed in a next release.

For those interested, see a similar thread here: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=43035

No resolution that I know of yet, hopefully the devs will be able to get it working for 0.8.6f

I'm also having problems with getting second monitor fullscreen.

In version 0.8.6c, video shows fullscreen on monitor 2, as I want, but I'm unable to use my apple remote to control anything.
In version 0.8.6d, neither automatic fullscreen on monitor 2 or the apple remote work.
In version 0.8.6e, fullscreen on monitor 2 doesn't work, but the apple remote does.

This has put me in a dilema! Can we have a fix soon please? For the time being, could anyone give me any advice to get my apple remote working with version 0.8.6c? That would be amazing!

Great bit of software though. So quick and efficient!
