Hi,

What VLC version do you use?

Would it be possible to get some mkv+dts samples that present the symptoms you have?
(or do you experience troubles with the sample here http://www.diatonis.com/downloads_dts_ac3.html )

Are you using the SPDIF audio output? Does it work without it?

Thanks!

Pierre
Version 0.8.6d
Problem only occurs when using SPDIF audio output.
Normal DTS plays fine, but when bitrate is approx 1.5 Mbit the sound gets choppy.

Hey, I've solved my issue just increasing vlc's buffer to 900ms
Smooth!

Could you paste here what is in the Messages Box (Menu Bar>Windows>Messages), after playing the DTS?

I'd like to isolate a non-working sample dts... Providing a link to a dts that doesn't would be nice.

Also, when not using the SPDIF, can you confirm that the same problems occur?

How does mplayer plays that file both using the SPDIF and without?

Thanks!

Pierre.

DTS track's bitrate is approx 1.5 mbps.
SPDIF connected to receiver, Audio output set to "Built-In Output (Encoded output)". Audio is choppy.
Same file, same settings, without SPDIF connected. Audio plays normally.
With Mplayer it's the opposite. Output is just noise without SPDIF. With SPDIF it plays fine through reciever.

Will try to upload test MKV somewhere.

Make sure X11 (under Optional Installs on the OS X Installation DVD) is installed. That will fix it!
After installiation of X11, I get following error:

Referenced from: /Applications/MPlayer OSX.app/Contents/Resources/External_Binaries/mplayer.app/Contents/MacOS/mplayer

MKV sample with DTS @ 1.5 mbps:
http://www.mediafire.com/?dnsmn11txiz

Note that it's not this specific file that causes the problem, it's all files with a high bitrate DTS track.

(actually I just realized that the sample I listed below is from the same source as the one referenced above, so no need to dowload it)

Pierre,
Contrary to what some say, neither VLC nor mPlayer will play some high bandwidth Matroska files with DTS audio properly over S/IPF. Here is a another classic example http://rapidshare.com/files/78518996/stutter.mkv.html (22MB). Download it ASAP because rapidshare doesn't keep files forever. Also this particular sample has a large number of audio tracks that are not accessible with the current version of VLC, QT player on the other hand lists and plays them properly with one sorry exception - main DTS 5.1 track.

If the download doesn't work, send me a private email, I can email that file to you directly (22Mb).

We've committed a patch that should fix this DTS issue.
http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/changeset/23941

Thanks for reporting the problem,

Pierre.

Hi,

I'm so happy that there finally is a bugfix for this issue! Thanks Pierre!

I installed the developer tools, downloaded the sourcecode of 0.8.6d and tried to build a package as described in http://wiki.videolan.org/OSXCompile (first without the fix just to test the process). However I run into a blocking issue when compiling the external libraries and also the bootstrap of VLC is running into problems I cannot fix, which are possibly related to the fact that I'm running Leopard with Xcode 2.5. I'm really not experienced with these tools and I already spent a lot of time trying to built this version I waited so long for.

I also tried a nightly build but without any success: the DTS-sound definately was fixed but the video was messy.

Is there anybody who is more experienced with this who can actually post version 0.8.6d with the DTS-fix? I would really appreciate it. And, based on the number of posts in the various forums, I expect a lot of people who are actually waiting for this. Especially on OSX as there are no good alternatives for playing 1080p with high bitrate DTS.

Thanks,

John.

Today I retried building version 0.8.6d, as mentioned in the previous post. I will describe every step I made, the errors I found and how I solved them (if possible). Maybe somebody more experienced with this build-process can support me in solving the blocking issues so eventually we all can benefit from package with a working VLC version 0.8.6d with the DTS-fix Pierre delivered a couple of days ago.

For this I installed Xcode 2.5 on Leopard in the directory /Developer (in stead of the default /Xcode2.5 which I used yesterday). I also extended the PATH as described in http://wiki.videolan.org/OSXCompile (but using the Developer-directory) so it can find the tools it needs (like GCC). Using Developer is because I was too lazy to make all the symbolic links from the Xcode directory to the Developer directory (which is where VLC expects the tools).

First step is to go to the directory extras/contrib and execute the command " ./bootstrap". The output is:

Code: Select all

++ gcc -dumpmachine + BUILD=i686-apple-darwin8 + test 0 = 1 + HOST=i686-apple-darwin8 + rm -f config.mak + echo -e '# Automatically generated by bootstrap.\n# Make changes if you know what you'\''re doing.\n' + test i686-apple-darwin8 '!=' i686-apple-darwin8 + case $HOST in + SDK_TARGET=10.4 + echo 'SDK_TARGET = 10.4' + echo 'HAVE_DARWIN_OS_ON_INTEL = 1' + echo 'HAVE_DARWIN_OS = 1' + echo 'ENVP = MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET=10.4' + echo 'MACOSX_SDK = /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk' + CFLAGS_TUNING=' -march=pentium-m -mtune=prescott' + EXTRA_CFLAGS=' -D${ENVP} -isysroot ${MACOSX_SDK}' + EXTRA_LDFLAGS=' -isysroot ${MACOSX_SDK} -Wl,-syslibroot,${MACOSX_SDK}' + echo 'PATH = /bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin' + echo 'BUILD = i686-apple-darwin8' + echo 'HOST = i686-apple-darwin8' ++ pwd + echo 'PREFIX = /Users/john/Desktop/vlc-0.8.6d/extras/contrib' + echo 'CC = ' + echo 'CXX = ' + echo 'LD = ' + echo 'RANLIB = ' + echo 'AR = ' + echo 'EXTRA_CFLAGS = -march=pentium-m -mtune=prescott -D${ENVP} -isysroot ${MACOSX_SDK}' + echo 'EXTRA_CPPFLAGS = -I/include' + echo 'EXTRA_LDFLAGS = -isysroot ${MACOSX_SDK} -Wl,-syslibroot,${MACOSX_SDK}' + echo 'EXTRA_PATH = ' + which curl + echo 'WGET = curl -O' + test -f /sw/bin/svn + test -f /usr/local/bin/svn + test -f /opt/local/bin/svn + svn help + echo 'SVN = svn'
The, in the same directory, i executed "make src" to make the external libraries. The output is:

Code: Select all

config.mak:1: *** missing separator. Stop.
When looking at the file config.mak in that directory I see the following contents:

Code: Select all

-e # Automatically generated by bootstrap. # Make changes if you know what you're doing. SDK_TARGET = 10.4 HAVE_DARWIN_OS_ON_INTEL = 1 HAVE_DARWIN_OS = 1 ENVP = MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET=10.4 MACOSX_SDK = /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk PATH = /bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin BUILD = i686-apple-darwin8 HOST = i686-apple-darwin8 PREFIX = /Users/john/Desktop/vlc-0.8.6d/extras/contrib CC = CXX = LD = RANLIB = AR = EXTRA_CFLAGS = -march=pentium-m -mtune=prescott -D${ENVP} -isysroot ${MACOSX_SDK} EXTRA_CPPFLAGS = -I/include EXTRA_LDFLAGS = -isysroot ${MACOSX_SDK} -Wl,-syslibroot,${MACOSX_SDK} EXTRA_PATH = WGET = curl -O SVN = svn
The problem is the "-e" as the first characters. When I remove this, the build process continues but the next error is:

Code: Select all

make -C src all make: make: Command not found make: *** [src] Error 127
It appears that the PATH-variable in the config.mak file (see above) is overwritten (in stead of extended). Changing this into

Code: Select all

PATH = /bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/Developer/bin:/Developer/sbin:/Developer/usr/bin:/Developer/usr/sbin
solves the issue. After a restart the build-process continues.

The build process finishes a couple of libraries until it finally quits with the following error when building fribidi-0.10.4.tar.gz:

Code: Select all

rm -fr .libs/libfribidi.la .libs/libfribidi.* .libs/libfribidi.* ./libtool: line 3144: test: too many arguments gcc -dynamiclib -undefined error -o .libs/libfribidi.0.0.0.dylib fribidi.lo fribidi_types.lo fribidi_mem.lo fribidi_mirroring.lo fribidi_char_type.lo fribidi_wcwidth.lo fribidi_utils.lo fribidi_char_sets.lo fribidi_char_sets_utf8.lo fribidi_char_sets_cap_rtl.lo fribidi_char_sets_iso8859_6.lo fribidi_char_sets_iso8859_8.lo fribidi_char_sets_cp1255.lo fribidi_char_sets_cp1256.lo fribidi_char_sets_isiri_3342.lo -L/Users/john/Desktop/vlc-0.8.6d/extras/contrib/lib -lc -install_name /Users/john/Desktop/vlc-0.8.6d/extras/contrib/lib/libfribidi.0.dylib /Developer/usr/bin/../libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin8/4.0.1/libtool: for architecture ppc7400 object: /usr/lib/libc.dylib malformed object (unknown load command 7) /Developer/usr/bin/../libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin8/4.0.1/libtool: for architecture: (null) file: -lc is not an object file (not allowed in a library) /Developer/usr/bin/../libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin8/4.0.1/libtool: for architecture ppc64 object: /usr/lib/libc.dylib malformed object (unknown load command 7) /Developer/usr/bin/../libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin8/4.0.1/libtool: can't locate file for: -lgcc_s.10.4 /Developer/usr/bin/../libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin8/4.0.1/libtool: file: -lgcc_s.10.4 is not an object file (not allowed in a library) /Developer/usr/bin/../libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin8/4.0.1/libtool: for architecture ppc7400 object: /usr/lib/libSystem.dylib malformed object (unknown load command 7) /Developer/usr/bin/../libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin8/4.0.1/libtool: for architecture: (null) file: -lSystem is not an object file (not allowed in a library) /Developer/usr/bin/../libexec/gcc/i686-apple-darwin8/4.0.1/libtool: for architecture ppc64 object: /usr/lib/libSystem.dylib malformed object (unknown load command 7) make[3]: *** [libfribidi.la] Error 1 make[2]: *** [all] Error 2 make[1]: *** [.fribidi] Error 2 make: *** [src] Error 2
I really don't know what is wrong here. Who can help me on this one?

Then I thought: I can also copy the libraries (the complete lib-directory) from the current VLC-version as they are not part of the bugfix anyway. After doing so (not knowing if this is possible at all but at least trying something), I continued building VLC itself.

I went to the root-directory of the package and executed "./bootstrap" with the following result:

Code: Select all

+ AUTOMAKESUCKS=no + INSTALLSUCKS=no + ACLOCAL_ARGS='-I m4 ' + test -d extras/contrib/bin + export PATH=./extras/contrib/bin:/Developer/bin:/Developer/sbin:/Developer/usr/bin:/Developer/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin + PATH=./extras/contrib/bin:/Developer/bin:/Developer/sbin:/Developer/usr/bin:/Developer/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin + test -d extras/contrib/share/aclocal + ACLOCAL_ARGS='-I m4 -I extras/contrib/share/aclocal' ++ uname -s + test .Darwin = .Darwin + export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=./extras/contrib/lib: + LD_LIBRARY_PATH=./extras/contrib/lib: + export DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=./extras/contrib/lib: + DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=./extras/contrib/lib: + amvers=no + for v in '"-1.9"' '"19"' '"-1.8"' '"18"' '"-1.7"' '"17"' '""' + automake-1.9 --version + amsuff=-1.9 + amvers=-1.9 + break + test -1.9 = no + case "${amvers}" in + libtoolize=no + glibtoolize --version + libtoolize=glibtoolize + test glibtoolize = no + gettextize --version ++ gettextize --version ++ sed -e '1s/[^0-9]*//' -e q + expr 0.14.6 '>=' 0.11.5 + autopoint=autopoint + GETTEXT=yes + pkg-config --version + PKGCONFIG=yes + aclocal=aclocal-1.9 + automake=automake-1.9 + autoconf=autoconf + autoheader=autoheader + set +x generating modules/**/Makefile.am and m4/private.m4 ................................................................ done. + rm -f aclocal.m4 configure config.log config.h config.h.in + rm -Rf 'autom4te*.cache' + rm -f config.guess config.sub missing mkinstalldirs compile depcomp install-sh + rm -Rf autotools + mkdir autotools + rm -f ltmain.sh libtool ltconfig + rm -f ABOUT-NLS + rm -Rf intl + rm -f stamp-builtin 'stamp-h*' mozilla/stamp-pic + rm -f vlc-config.in + printf '' + '[' yes '!=' yes ']' + glibtoolize --copy --force /Developer/usr/bin/glibtoolize: line 156: cd: /usr/share/libtool: No such file or directory glibtoolize: cannot list files in `/usr/share/libtool'
It cannot find the directory /usr/share/libtool. Just creating it and retrying the command also didn't solve the problem:

The directory is empty and I'm completely lost on how to continue. Who can help me with this?

Thanks,

John.

Thanks for your suggestion Jean-Baptiste.

Unfortunately building the libs now crashed on freetype-2.3.5.tar.gz:

... I also tried a nightly build but without any success: the DTS-sound definately was fixed but the video was messy. ....
I downloaded a nightly build a few days back and it's fine, DTS problem is fixed and video plays fine fore me.
-----
Here is another (unrelated) bug that needs to be fixed one day. It has do to with crashing VLC leaving system audio in unusable state. Specifically if VLC crashes while playing a file with DTS audio over optical the system is left in "encoded digital output" mode. Restarting VLC however doesn't recognize this fact as VLC is unable to play any audio after the crash, DTS or everything else. The workaround is to reset audio to "digital 2-channels" in Apple's Audio MIDI Setup and restart VLC.

VLC should be able to correctly recognize the state of the system audio, which means it should return audio to its default optical state first (2-channels) if needed and switch to encoded only when playing encoded streams.

Directore,

I downloaded and tested the nightly builds from januari 4, 2 and 1 for Mac OSX Intel but all have the messy video-output (1080p) which frequently stops also. Audio (DTS) is perfect though.

When I try the same content with version 0.8.6d I get very good and fluent video but choppy audio, as expected since the DTS-fix is not part of this version.

Which version did you download and test?

Thanks,

John.

The same here.

High Bitrate DTS Audio is fixed in the January 4. build but video is now unwatchable (1080p .mkv's). I guess this has to do with the "slow ffmpeg" version in the latest trunk because of Leopard build problems?

Rather dissapointing to finally have the audio working and then the video stops working.

The trusty old MPlayer will have to be used again, only thing I miss with MPlayer is a "Blank screen" in fullscreen option.

I've just installed the 12/4/07 Build of MPlayer OSX and I can confirm that it works *wonderfully* with every DTS MKV I have.

I have a 2006 MacBook 2.0 GHz Core Duo (1st Gen) with 2GB RAM running Leopard.

To enable DTS and AC3 passthrough to SPDIF in MPlayer OSX:

1. Go to "Preferences"
2. Go to "Miscellaneous" tab
3. Check the "Additional Parameters" box
4. Paste the following switches into the text box: -afm hwac3

In sharp contrast, none of the DTS MKVs I have were playable using VLC in either Windows or Leopard.

While I'm reluctant to poo poo VLC for such a seemingly obscure issue, this one has existed forever and has received virtually zero attention from the devs. The fact the community's only "fix" for the issue is to move to a different app demonstrates the need for some dev attention on this frequently discussed shortcoming of VLC.

Until that happens, it seems that MPlayer is the only DTS playback solution for Mac OS X.

Where exactly can i find this "12/4/07" build of MPlayer? The one available on their website doesnt work with that fix. I STILL cant get 1.5Mb DTS audio track to work! Someone please help!

Did you deactivate loop filters ?

Re: Problems with DTS & MKV

Postby directore » 05 Jan 2008 07:40

Well I got the latest binary available on 01/02. No version or build # on this one. It says 0.9.0-svn, 01/02, 3.49:AM, 36,305,731 bytes.

Plays 720p mkv Blade Runner clip I linked to in my first post fine both video (avc1) and audio over opticalw (dts). Same with another 720p mkv that had a problem with choppy DTS audio before.

Re 1080p I don't have the requisite file to test so the only thing I can tell you is that this sample file
http://www.uploading.com/files/D9FUS644 ... X.mkv.html
1080p/24fps (mkv, avc1, 1.5Mbit dts 5.1), plays fine with 0.8.6 but not with 0.9.0-svn, audio fine in both cases, but video corrupted with the latter.

Jean-Baptiste,

I disabled the loop-filter for All. Actually I have used the same settings in both versions so it is indeed the new build and not the settings.

Did you deactivate loop filters ?
Thanks for the reply.

Sorry, what is loop filters and how do I deactivate them?

PS. There is another problem with the latest trunk. If I try to access preferences, VLC crashes. It worked the first time. But after setting up my preferences I can't access it again.

Also, fullscreen on the secondary monitor doesn't work. I have set Video Device to 2 as I always have but I still have to go and Manually choose Display 2 in before I go fullscreen otherwise VLC crashes. If I manually choose it I can switch to fullscreen but Blank screen on second monitor doesn't work anymore.

Regards
Martin

Martin,

you can find the loopfilter in Preferences -> Input Codecs -> Other Codecs -> FFmpeg -> Skip the Loop filter voor H.264 decoding. Set this to All. This option is only visible when you activate the Advanced-option in Preferences bottom left-corner.

BTW: I don't have the same experience with the crashing VLC when entering the Preferences a couple of time.

I've not been able to verify the issue since my mbp has been stolen :(

But it sounds like it's working fine now so _huge_ thanks to you guys for fixing this issue.
