A to B Repeat Feature

Postby wmoritz » 16 Oct 2006 13:35

Most DVD player have a feature to tag an 'A' position and a 'B' position and then play from 'A' to 'B' repeatly.

This could be the only video player that does that making it the most popular program in the world! :D

That's already available. It's called bookmarks i think and it's somewhere in one of the menues. Tell me if it still works :) (we never test that feature)

This is not exactly AB repeat. One is indeed able to create bookmarks but in order to repeat a certain sequence one has to extract the content between the two bookmarks and than save it to a separate file. This is a bit cumbersome.

AB repeat as Wmoritz suggests (and the way it should be available to the user IMO) can be seen in The KMPlayer and it's one of the reasons I run that excellent program too.

I second Wmoritz's request for AB repeat as it is widely available on CD/DVD players. It's really a powerful and attractive feature and shouldn't be too difficult to implement since you've got the bookmarks/save extraction part nailed?

Hoping v0.8.x takes on AB repeat...

A B repeat

Postby Dewayne » 06 Jan 2007 23:49

I would say A/B repeat is a crucial missing feature. indeed I would retire use of Nero Showtime in favor of VLC except I would miss A/B and it seems so SIMPLE. I thought maybe Nero had a copyright on the feature & this is why no other player has it. Maybe the developers don't see it as important but then why does Every DVD player on the planet have it.

Yes!! This is a feature I really miss too.

Zoom Player has it and it works perfectly there, but Zoom Player has no rotate function which VLC has. So, a frustration being built up when I need BOTH of these feature at the same time.

Apparently KM Player (recommended above) handles both (just tested it). Thanks for letting me know about it.

I would hardly call bookmarks (which has no repeat facility at all) an AB repeat.

On my PowerDVD, it used bookmarks and the AB repeat feature. If bookmarks are the same thing, then what is the purpose of having both? As far as I understand it, bookmarks are to save a certain position in a video so that if you close it you could return to that particular place in the video.

But the AB repeat allows you to press a hotkey to set a start position and press the same key to set an end position and it will loop between them. And besides, I use VLC 0.8.6a and have found nothing in the hotkey settings that says bookmarks.

Yes several people have read your first reply and as a result felt compelled to explain the AB repeat function to you in detail. Please address their remarks.

A-B repeat will make VLC a really versatile player, not just for watching movies. 8)

A/B for Foreign Language learning

Postby MartinGugino » 23 Aug 2007 05:40

It is quite a handy feature if you are trying to learn Korean (or any non latin script). You can play the movie, watch the subtitles, and listen to the pronunciation. There are many features that would help one to learn a foreign language by watching DVDs, but A/B replay is certainly one of them.

I'd find it to be useful. It may not attract a whole lot of users but it just seems like a basic feature in most media players so not having may discourager some users.

The implementation of the "A to B repeat" feature and of the feature of "showing bookmarks (say, as subtitles)" I suggested recently could be based on a single generalized mechanism: the bookmarked moment of a video when passed during playback triggers a specified action.

In the case of "showing bookmarks as subtitles", the triggered action is "show the corresponding bookmark name".

In the case of "A to B repeat", the triggered action at bookmark B is "jump to A".

Perhaps, it could be useful something else.

Currently A-B repeat functions in the nightly builds and so far it seems to work pretty well.

Sounds great! It's very helpful for learning languages and for understanding key dialogue in films that is mumbled :-)

So, if the A-B feature is here already, how do I access it? I tried the online docs I could find and browsing the menus but it seems I have not been lucky so far.

Can someone perhaps please give me a pointer?

Many thanks,
David.

Try not to double post :).

The AB repeat feature is in the development builds of VLC (0.9.0-git). Download nightly builds from here:
http://nightlies.videolan.org/

To display the "AB" button go to "Tools >> Advanced controls".

Ah, thanks! I thought that since Dec 07 it might have made its way into the standard 0.8.x releases.

Best wishes,
David.
