Rotate video clip 90 degrees?

Postby wonderland2me » 19 Nov 2007 20:24

I've done a search but info was 1)not helpful 2) perhaps beyond my skill level. Maybe both are true. Is there any help or a fix for rotating a VLC media player short movie clip clockwise 90 degrees? I'd like to send it right-side-up in an email or put it on youtube. Thanks for any help.

Yes, that can be done in the latest nightly builds (0.9.0-svn):
http://nightlies.videolan.org/

If you, when playing a video, go to:
Tools >> Extended settings...

And then go to:
Video Adjustments and Effects >> Some random name

You can enable the "Rotate" modifier.

However, you may not find that particulary useful for rotaing it exactly 90 degrees (perhaps a text box could be added for this?). If you instead go into:
Tools >> Preferences...

Then select "All" for show settings. Then go to:
Video >> Filters >> Rotate

And change the Angle in degrees. The press "Save".

Cheers, Arite.

Thanks, Artie. I am technically challenged and was unsuccessful in making the adjustment. Is there a way of sending that is not embarrassingly public? I can't put a sideways clip on youtube, yet still want to send it to family. They'd have to watch it sideways, but oh well... that would be no surprise to them!

Sorry - my explaination wasn't very clear .

Right, well first download a nightly build of the latest VLC (0.9.0):
http://nightlies.videolan.org/

Unpack or install it (depending which one you get), and open vlc.exe.

Then, in VLC (0.9.0), go to:
Tools >> Preferences...

And select "All" for show settings. Then go to:
Video >> Filters >> Rotate

You should be here:

Change the value to "90", and press "Save". You may need to restart VLC. Then try playing a video, it should be rotated 90 degrees clockwise.

Cheers, Arite.

VLC version: OVER 9000!!!
Operating System: It's...blue screen
Location: Heaven? No no. What's that other place that starts with an "H"? Oh yes: Home. ^_^

With the nightly builds you also have the option of rotating the video through the Extended Settings. Image Open up VLC (nightly build), click on (button) EX, (tab) Video Adjustments and Effects -> Some Random Name, tick the "Rotate" box and, even while the video is playing, you can rotate it incrementally. Just another option if want. :)

Yes, that is true - only it can only be done using the wheel (getting e.g. 90 degrees exactly can be hard). Perhaps an additional text box could be added which would allow the user to specify the exact rotation in degrees in the "Some random name" tab (just an idea :))?

Good Idea.
