VLC and Leopard

Postby iditude » 19 Oct 2007 09:02

Hi guys,

I've been using VLC for a while and it really rocks...
I just have a little question : did any of you tested it on any build of leopard ? should it run or will you have to rewrite part of the program ?

I'm not ready to switch if all softwares don't run correctly and VLC is a must-have!

VLC was tested on Leopard for more than 9 months now and it is working flawlessly. Just install and enjoy. The last thing to investigate is Apple Remote support, as we heard of some problems, but I don't know yet whether they still occur with the GM build of Leopard. Will have a look at it tomorrow morning.

VLC will work on Leopard with the same feature set as on Tiger for now, but some enhancements are somewhere in the pipeline.

No, not yet, as I didn't find a DVD burner next to me yet, which is capable to burn a DVD-R-DL disk... Hopefully, my external HD will do the job later on. (I'm one of those guys who can download the 7 gig from Apple.com, but need to deal with it on their own afterwards...)

As soon as I have the GM running, I will have a look at it and hopefully provide a fix.

I will report any fix here.

Great idea :D

However, I convinced a dorm-mate to burn me the disk in the meantime, so I got Leopard running now. I've already submitted a patch and I'm currently working on an Intel-only binary for you guys to test.

I've just noticed that double-clicking the play/pause button to enter/leave VLC's fullscreen mode doesn't work in this build. I will investigate this tomorrow.

Please answer to this thread, if you notice anything else.

I've uploaded a new build, which fixes the support on OSX Tiger and adds a couple of new features. Please test:

I've just tried out the build... it seems fine (thankyou by the way :D ) though the double click for full screen, although working, is a bit temperamental; about 50% of the time it simply pauses/plays (i.e. single click rather than double click). I think the timing between clicks can be honed as it is currently slightly pot luck if you get double or single clicks. That said; the main issue (i.e. Leopard remote compatibility) is perfect from what i can see :)

I'm confused, does that build help VLC player in Leopard? I downloaded, dragged it to my applications file, but still the remote doesnt work. Please post a response, i love VLC player, but without the remote its pretty much useless.

The rebuild works fine. Use the "Delete Preferences" script then put the rebuild in the applications folder. Reboot and your back in business.

So many of you are talking about your remote controls not working with VLC and Leopard. I think that is a trivial problem until we see a REGION FREE fix for the MacBook pro and other recently purchased macs.
With Region Free DVD-players now under US$50 in the stores, the fixing of regions in computers is a JOKE.
All I want is the freedom to view my own large DVD collection from most regions of the world when I travel interstate or overseas, or if I wish to rent a DVD in a foreign cointry.

VLC in leopard works great so far, but i have seen a few issues with it .

if you have 2 or more movies in the playlist and you watch both in full screen when you come out of full screen the movie window is missing something here

Image

also wile in full screen the onscreen controls don't all the time work. you have to go to windowed mode and go back to full screen to get them to work again.

its been a wile since i have been in Tiger ( since the 26th) so i cant remember if it has the same issues or not. it still like to crash allot after a wile of watching video streams. but not as much as it does in tiger. in tiger it does it 100% of the time after watching like 4 -5 streaming videos in VLC, and only happens about 50% of the time in Leopard

@julesblack: The region code issue is neither related to VLC nor to Leopard, but a firmware problem which cannot be solved with ordinary methods. Search the forum for RPC1 vs RPC2 to get more information about it.

@madmax_2069: I am currently investigating this re-draw error, but I suspect that it's a driver issue. Please describe the problems with the on-screen-controls more in details. Sounds interesting, as it works flawlessly for me..

Felix
I have to disagree.
My Mac Powerbook (Wall Street with a bronze keyboard) I bought in 2000 and just missed out on getting an RPC 1 drive.
VLC did the trick.
My G4 desktop is just over 3 years old and again VLC worked.
My brand-new MacBook pro doesn't work and you have hinted there are work-arounds.
