Hardware YUV DirectX Output

I was watching something using VLC and a box popped up called "Hardware YUV DirectX Output" with nothing playing in it. When I close that window, the video stops playing and I have to re-open it. I was wondering what that box is all about, how I can get it to not pop up, and why it does pop up. Thanks!
