Sorry, but this is unclear to me.
You are just discussing of an editor GUI mockup or new functionnalities ?
What can't you actually in the current editor ?

Try out mp3tagtools if you haven't used it already.(and have some time)

It is more "functional" than VLC metadata editor at the moment. It is basically an "all in one" mp3 tag editor. For example, you can select every song in an album, and edit the "album title" for those songs all at once. It can also rename file names for you quite easily based on the information stored in the tags.

You might not be happy about this, because you spent so much time fixing the metadata editor already (and if this idea goes ahead, your work will probably go to waste), but it is a handy feature.

Edit* By the way, here is a picture to let you know some of the functions it has.
http://www.georgedillon.com/freeware/sc ... gtools.gif

Another way to describe it is a "mass mp3 editor"

Oh, well... I already have an ID3 tag editing tool as I've descried in the previous link. Like I've said, I use Mp3tag to edit all of my music and it works in the same exact way as the program you've descried.

My idea above was to somewhat integrate that tool with VLC since it'll soon have the ability to edit and save tags.

It works very well but I think that VLC could function similarly to it with a few tweaks, for instance the ability to select items from the playlist and then add tags such as Artist(s), Album, Year and Genre, then things like title and track number could be applied manually or through the internet (freedb).

I set up the screenshot the way it is so that the playlist is viewable and the already existing "Media information" tab is embedded into the interface itself. It just seems easier to edit this way.

So look closely at the screenshot of Mp3tag and the screenshot of the mock-up VLC tag editing tool and tell me if it seems practical to have it this way.

It's probably best just to try the program so that you'll see exactly what can improve the current tag tool for VLC.

Oh I see! Sorry, I thought we used the same tagging tool. They both do pretty much the same thing though I think.

I think this addition would be nice, but it doesn't really need to be high priority right?

OK. you just want a mass tag editor... Why couldn't you say it before ? Well, yes, this is far from being high priority. The priority is to be able to edit tags that are not played ...

Sorry, let me change that. [edit.]

OK, Question: I've been hearing about some other players that allow for tag editing, like foobar, and... some others I can't remember the names to. Is this pretty much the same idea I've posted for VLC or do those work differently?

Is there any idea for a time scale for the full release of QT4 and the next version of VLC.

I read somewhere that the aim was end of this year.

I'm no programmer, but I think thats a little optimistic. Judging by nightlies, there is still much to do.

By the way, can someone tell me if the ms-dos window problem I described 1 page back has been fixed yet or not? My internet is so slow even downloading 11mb nightlies is a pain... Thanks.

Alright, end of the year then. I must have been thinking about something else. :?

The window problem hasn't been fixed yet nor has the seek bar at the top thing. I guess we'll just have to wait a little longer, I'm sure they're already aware of these issues.

Alright so here's an alternative to the Interface Houdini posted on the first page.

==============================================
[#25] Interface Transparency = Better Interface Houdini
==============================================

Instead of just making the entire interface totally disappear then reappear on mouse-over, maybe it would be easier to implement, and more user friendly, if you added some sort of "Interface transparency" slider in the Simple preferences (numerical in the Advanced Preferences).

Image

I alway thought it
would be better to
have VLC interface
blend with the
background a little
more.

It'll work the same
whether you're
viewing the playlist
or watching a video.

Playlist:
Image

Video:
Image

And look at it this way,
if you implement a
transparency slider
along with the "Apply
default opacity on
mouse-over" option
you'd pretty much have
the Interface Houdini.

Image

Image

Well I think that this is a better idea then the previous one although it's still a little different and it doesn't quite include all of the other options mentioned in the Interface Houdini post. I hope that this one isn't going to be too much of a problem, I mean with VLC not supporting Alpha Blending and all. I also think that this would be really nice to have for skins, not just on the Design side but also for users that like to customize their media players.

My WMP11 VLC skin
with transparency.

Image

Well you think that over, you too funman. :P

Well done on all the work you put into your ideas Cloudstalker. You present them well.

I think I've found another slight bug issue with the nightly builds. My version is 20070804 by the way.

The slider doesn't seem to be working properly anymore. When I want to skip to a certain point in a video (avi), and I click on that point, the video does not skip to that point. It "misses" I guess. It skips to another point. This does not seem to happen with .mp3 files...

example,

I click
---------------------|--------------------

Video skips to
------------------------------------|-----

Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks for the complement. I made a thread not too long ago that's specifically designed for reporting nightly builds issues: Nightly Builds - Bugs and Fixes. I've recently moved it (hopefully to the right place) so check it out.

Is it possible to add a simple "undo" option in the menus? This way just in case a file is deleted accidentally it can be recovered. Also the option to decide how many undoes can be done will be useful.

I'm just wondering, did the switch to make VLC start minimized ever get implemented?

Because I really need that feature now, but I can't seem to find it anywhere in the documentation.

I see something for it in the Preferences (Image) but I can't seem to get it to function; maybe it's still in development or something. j-b?

Sorry to use your thread but I noticed that when the video is playing the play symbol doesn't change to a pause symbol like it did in the wxWidgets interface. I think that feature would be nice.

:? Why does everyone think that this is my thread? It's for everyone. 8) If you have any ideas about the QT4 interface feel free to post them here. I'm sure that I'm not the only one with ideas. :P

As for the pause button I'm sure they're going to add that, I think it was discussed earlier in this thread. Probably it's just not all that important in this stage of development.

What? Really? Does it function like what was mentioned above with the mouse-over option and all? I've downloaded the latest nightly build but I don't see the option, so I guess that I'll have to wait to test it out. 8)

Awesome! Thanks! :D

You need to take the 3 september one. And you can just define a transparency level. We did not do the mouse-over thing.

Great! I like this a lot! :D I hope that you'll consider the mouse-over option for the future, I know that isn't priority or anything but a nice option to have none the less.

Edit: Interesting. It appears that the system tray hide/show interface icon only seems to work with some Windows skins but not all. Could someone else confirm this? Try changing to a different skin and see if this makes a difference.
