Problem

Postby kustec » 22 Aug 2006 09:40

I just installed the latest version of VLC media player for Winder.

Inserted a DVD and tried to start. The following message occurs:

Assertion failed!
Program: C: /Program Files/VideoLAN/VLC/vlc.exe
File:vm.c
Line:1742
Expression:pgcit!= NULL

For information on how your program canc cause an assertion failure, see the Visual C++ documentation on asserts
(Press Retry to debug the application - JIT must be enabled).

I pressed Retry, but still nothing happens. Could someone assist me in solving this problem.

Many thanks in advance.

Assertion failure

Postby bemused1 » 22 Aug 2006 20:11

On Windows 2000 Professional, SP4 and current fixes, on a 2 GHz Intel Celeron processor running on an MSI (Microstar International) mainboard, 1 GB mem, running VLC 0.8.5, I receive
Program: C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe
File: h264.c
Line 3612

Expression: best_i != INT_MIN

No debugger is aboard this machine. The media file is an .mp4 downloaded from a Canadian site.

As a matter of interest, VLC 0.8.5 runs beautifully on an IBM(Lenovo) R51
with 1.2 GB of memory, 1.8 Ghz processor and Windows XP Pro/SP2.

I will attempt to upgrade from Windows 2K to XP Pro by month-end on the MSI-powered desktop.

What canadian site?

It would be nice to be able to test against the actual material (actually it's the only way.)
You can also try a nightly developer build. http://nightlies.videolan.org

Yeah, this seems to be specific to DVDs without a startup menu. check out the link (http://forums.vso-software.fr/viewtopic.php?p=2469#2469), it's an extensive discussion - and no solution.
I have the same problem.

By the way, Derk, the problem description might be more to the point that these DVDs don't have startup menues. I have no idea which program mine was made with. However, it works fine in NERO movie viewer and doesn't work in real player.

If you get the assertion failed!! File: vm.c Line 1741 problem, there are 3 options
abort - will terminate vlc
retry - can do so twice, then system crashes
ignore - will open : assertion failed!! File: vm.c Line 1641 problem, (and the same 3 options)
more ignoring doesn't change anything, and retry results in: vlc.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. An error log has been created (although I can't find it).

The same happens when I try using the wizard to save the DVD as a file.

Has there been any progress in addressing this for a new vlc version (here used: 0.8.6c)

Thanks

Tried the trunk-20070828-0001, but starting vlc.exe only opens the console for a microsecond and that was it - is there a trick how to setup the nightly builds?

trunk-20070827-0000/ runs the actual program interface, but:
1) I can play the first vob file (which is the non-existent dvd menu), and it shows me a green rectangle for 0.1sec.
2) opening any other vob files creates a host of errors.
3) Open disc (DVD) simply doesn't work, and starting the disc checking "no menus" terminates the program.

This could be both due to the DVd without a menu, or the instability of the betas, I don't know.

Tey to incorporate a fix for this assertion:

Unfortunately, I s*** at non-comsol coding, otherwise I'd take a look.
